Evo on long road trip?????
Evo on long road trip?????
Well i live in san diego and im moving to philly and was curious if i should be worried about driving the evo across country? My main concern is the stock clutch. I have about 3500mi on my car and the clutch doesnt seem that bad, but im worried that it might go out on me in the middle of nowhere. I was going to ship it, but all the car transporter companys just seem shady. I was just seeing if any fellow members have any good input. thanks....
Well, if you're driving on the Interstate in 5th gear, you are putting no wear on the clutch...stop and go traffic will wear it out faster than highway driving...long trips should be no problem...
If your clutch is fine now, a long trip should have no effect upon it with normal on/off ramp stuff. Let the car idle a few minutes after 3 or 4 hour runs at highway speeds. Take a small throw pillow for the left arm rest and keep thinking one thing to make the trip shorter:
94 Octane Gas

The evo loves cruzin on the highway, you will just wish it had cruise control on that long of a trip.. Mine has made several trips to STL and to Up michigan from chicago. not a problem! ohh 1 hour in rush hour will put more strain on your clutch than this road trip!
Went from Northern IL (20 minutes from the WI border) to Norwalk Ohio lastyear for the DSM meet....drove wonderfully!!! Especially that little section between Indiana and Ohio...last toll in Indiana and first one in Ohio.....
Ummmm....let's say ability to fly!
600mi each way....just wish it had cruise....but hey...I'm not driving a honda!

In general, the clutch shouldn't just fail out of nowhere. Especially at such low mileage. Most problems seem to occur after repeated heavy launches and bad downshifts. Chances are you'll be cruising @80 the whole way, just don't shift down to 2nd to pass some semi!
Wow, some good feed back. Im probably gonna drive out there, but im gonna have to invest in a front bra for the car. Besides that I guess im good to go. Oh yeah, and 94 oct. gas sounds mighty
i drove from maryland to north texas than to san antinio (several times) and back than to maryland and than to ohio had no probs with stock clutch currently i have 18000 and some change on the odometer.
The bra idea is a pretty good idea i got some dings on the front clip from debris. As for mileage it depends on how much you get on it.

2 Thoughts:
Check into a COLGAN CUSTOM Car Bra Part#PR1241.1+ for Mitsubishi Evolution. I got one in "Carbon Fiber" look for my VIII. Very nice! A little over $100.
Purchase one of those adjustable curtain rods and adjust it to fit between gas pedal and the front edge of drivers seat. Set 'er on 75mph, prop that rod in place and cruise brother! :-)
