Major Service (60mile/100km) questions

Hey all,

Gonna have a major service done soon and i have a few questions about some things..

1. I need to replace my front AND rear o2 sensors but I'm also planning to add afr gauge (that comes with a o2 sensor itself).. so, do i need to only get a front OR rear sensor on top?

2. For a timing belt change, is a water pump change required? Ive sourced a few timing belt kits that come with and without it so im not sure of exactly what parts are needed.

3. Random one not related to a service: is an SE lip removable from the IX bumper? mine is a little scratched up and i wanna get it repainted.

Thanks

Why do you need to replace your oxygen sensors? I would not replace them unless they are defective. Engine water pump replacement is not required for a timing belt change, but it is cheap insurance to replace it while you have the timing belt off of the engine. That way, you know you have a new water pump in there when you replace the belt. The SE lip is removable from the IX front fascia.

Is there a mechanic telling you to change stuff?, the water pump is a good idea, the O2 sensors are expensive, leave them be. You should have done a timing belt at 60km or even before.

It's not REQUIRED, but it's not a bad idea, especially since everything that would need to come off to get to it will already have been taken off and/or replaced. The extra labor charge, if any, will be minimal (and might only end up being the cost of the part itself).

Personally, when I had my 60k service done a couple of years ago, I told the shop to change it, but they said right off the bat that I probably wouldn't need it. But when they were pulling off the belts, they did show me that there was a little bit of coolant starting to cake at the pump, which they said indicated that there might be a tiny, tiny leak just barely starting, but they said it was my call. I told them that I was there prepared to change it out anyway and had them do it, just to be on the safe side. I'd rather spend the extra $100 or so just to avoid it until the next timing belt change at 120k than have to replace it by itself if it ends up leaking more before then.

Thanks. Im well aware it can be part of a timing belt change anyway. Ill replace the water pump for peace of mind. Cost/labour is no issue.

Reason for changing o2 sensors is because my engine check light is always on and i have been told the cause are my sensors.

Find out what the codes are before throwing parts at it. Do you have an exhaust with decat pipe?

figure out the codes for the cel.
change the water pump, why not? your already in there might as well.
a wideband does not replace the existing sensors. get a downpipe or cat and put an extra bung in there for the wideband. preferably before the catalytic converter.
if indeed ur sensor is bad, there is a guy in the for sale section selling an OEM replacement for like 75 bucks. i replaced mine with that and its a perfect oem replacement. if u go to the dealer, expect to pay 300+.
im not sure about jdm evo's but the secondary o2 is just a cat checker. ie, if theres no cat then it'll throw a code. so if your code is for the secondary o2, buy the o2 extender and ur set.

I guess thats a much wiser choice! Will get my tuner to check before i start buying unnecessary parts. I have a HKS cat-back and an unknown aftermarket cat (car came with em when i bought it)

thanks sujinx, im getting a custom front/downpipe made and ill see if i can get them to fabricate an extra bung on it.

im definitely not getting the sensors from the dealership.. im able to get em thru local vendors, but even then theyre not cheap. but ill get the cel checked out before jumping the gun.

I think at 60k you really only need your timing belt, accessory belts, and fluids changed, BUT while you're in there you might as well do the water pump especially if it hasn't been changed yet on a car that's almost 10 years old. I also did some small preventative maintenance items. PCV valve, throttle body shaft seals, spark plugs, upgraded to stainless brake lines, and better fluid, and a couple of other small things.
