EVO Warranty and Mitsu
EVO Warranty and Mitsu
Seriously, the EVO has the worst stock clutch i have ever seen. I have 3120 miles on my evo and the clutch it totaly gone. the car wont move at all, i had to have it towed. I barely slipped the clutch on 3 runs and poof clutch is gone. I am in a loop with mitsu cause of this. Im telling Mitsu that i will provide a brand new and more durable and reliable clutch if they do the install as a warranty job. Of course they said no. Ladies and germs, its pretty simple why the packed such a crap clutch on a EVO. And that is because they will burn fast and cost more to replace with labor. Mitsu never had a problem like this when the 95-99 Eclipses were introduced. I think that they need to rethink thier warranty b4 they bring over the 2004 EVO's. Cause to tell you the truth im really pissed right now. They bring over a EVO, not a mirage or a montero, and they expect that the car is going to be used as a everyday family 4 door sedan? i think not. I believe with enough people we get can a countrywide petition started to maybe have some type of impact towards our current crap warranty. ****!!! i even got a paper from mitsu with known problems that ever EVO has. Rubbing or whinding down noises from 2,000 rpms and down, The breaks squeal like a pig when they get hot and some others. I think if we have to live with our EVO with its current Stock defects, i think they should rethink about how they treat the EVO owners towards thier warranty.
I went to the Mitsu dealer in Great Neck, LI last week and the salesman told me that mitsu upped the warranty on the 03's to 7/100,000 as to not dick over 03 buyers when the 04's came with a longer warranty. And to make new 04 buyers happy they upped their warranty to 10/100,000. After he told me that he said "hey, it worked for Hyundai"
, so I don't know how truthful that is but maybe zooracer can jump in here since he works there.

BTW: I learned to drive stick on the evo

There's a great article in the current issue of Grassroots Motorsports magazine about clutches. Their take on them is that you can put various drive line parts at risk if you move beyond the stock organic clutch that came with the vehicle. That's probably why Mitsubishi isn't interested in helping you put a non-stock clutch in the vehicle.

We called two dealers in this area, as well as
corporate number, and they all said they had no info on backdating or adding an extension to the 2003 model year warranty.
Guess we're outta luck

not only would my dealer warranty the clutch ( at least til 10k miles ) but if i came in with a HKS or Excedy (sp?) clutch they would be more than happy to do it for me... hell they put all my aftermarket stuff on and rechecked my Emanage and Profec e-01 install... it's ALL about who you know!!!!!
zerofrost - you and those like you just don't get it. mitsu is in business to make money. they make cars by borrowing money from stockholders with a promise to return profit to those lenders. if they don't make profit, they go down hard and EVERYONE (customers alike) loses.
there are plenty of people with the stock clutch that have had no problems and it's lived well beyind 20k miles for them.
if every single evo, regardless of how it's driven, had clutch issues under 5k miles, that would be grounds for a legitimate complaint.
but you guys that are adding power and/or launching the car by slipping the clutch need to realize that you're crossing a threshold of responsibility when you do such things.
mitsu's safety margins on the overbuild of their parts ( i.e. - the margin you take advantage of when you add power and don't snap the crankshaft) is there for THEM. They engineered it as insurance for their pocketbooks, not for your arbitrary decision to go faster if you so choose.
their clutch is obviously meant to be the glass jaw of the driveline that lets everything else live. IMO, you and many others need to learn the meaning of PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY.

These are the kind of people that can't accept that they cause the damage and has to blame someone else. I know of a few people with stock clutches on their evos and have more that 30k and their clutches are fine.
