Pursuing my first Evo.

Morning gents and ladies,

I'm currently at a point with my current car (2002 built WRX with ~500awhp) where I want to change up the scenery, and learn more about, in my opinion, a well respected AWD platform I haven't touched yet. I'm thinking of going with an Evo IX as I'm not a fan of the face lift of the X. I was wondering if this is a good path to travel.. Or should I lean more towards an VIII? I don't know the changes between them, or if one responds better to mods, etc. looking for personal experiences and knowledge. Thanks in advanced

The only real difference between an 8/9 is that the 9 has mivec. Otherwise the body is SLIGHTLY different. I wanna hear some details and see some pics of this wrx!

Forged rods, pistons, bearings

between the VIII and the IX there isn't any huge differences besides a front bumper, slightly bigger turbo, and mivec. the evo is a great route if you want the most bang for your buck. you'll probably spend about half of what you did on the subie to get to 500 awhp on the evo.

Yeah.. That's what I've found through research. Any major issues I need to look out for?

Make sure the T-case is filled full with Diaqueen; majority of the time the tcase fails because it's low on fluid or filled with incorrect fluid. Besides that there is really nothing to watch out for. It's a much more relaxing car to own versus the Subaru. You'll really enjoy it more than the Subaru, responds better to your dollar and don't gotta worry about it spinning a bearing every time you turn the key.

So your planning on selling the 500HP suby and starting again with an Evo IX and building it up to 500HP?

Hope you have a good budget in place as it won't be cheap

Theres a good sticky thread on buying your first Evo that you can read too. This forum as so much info on DIY if you want to tinker, I'm currently fixing leaking injector and throttle shaft seals, stuff wears out on these cars over 10 years so you need to have the time and money to fix the small stuff as you go on. My car is immac and low miles but still got small issues that just keeps it off the road for a week or 2. The more HP you want out of them the more tinkering and tuning time required. You should be used to this with the Suby anyway.
