OP: If you decide to buy an evo 9 - the car will turn you into a mechanic. You're going to spend hours and hours on the internet learning about how it works, how to fix things, how to maintain things. You'll be taking things apart and putting them back together. You'll be buying, uh, "sodas" for your friend(s) when they come over to help you mount your transmission back in after you've replaced the clutch. You'll either be learning to tune the car yourself, or paying a tuner to do it for you. A lot of people love doing this stuff (myself included), and maybe you already have this expectation. But if not, I just wanted to share this part of owning an evo. It can either be a fun learning experience if you like getting your hands dirty, or it can potentially cost you a ton of money.
it's what most of us live for... but not when we have 2-3yrs of high school and then college (if you are smart :P ) to deal with.
A lot of the gents on here are correct in what they say. Here's my opinion on the matter.
If these conditions are satisfied, then you can buy an evo IX. Please excuse me in advance for sounding like a boring old man.
1. College funds: If you know that you will have money for tuition and books, either through parents or side savings, this condition is satisfied.
2. Job: You will need to start working a part time job during school to maintain any car, not just an evo. This would also cover insurance, registration, and smog fees if applicable. Bottom line, you have to have money flowing in, even if it's minimal.
3. Discipline: People will try to race you on public roads. Please do not participate in their childish behavior. You don't want to be another statistic.
A lot of what I mentioned above goes for many cars.
If you can satisfy all the conditions above, then I personally see no reason why you can't own an Evo IX. They have gone cheaper over the years and offer a great learning experience. If you can't satisfy all three conditions above, then please, please, please set the money aside in a high interest savings account for college. Student loans are miserable!
i can't believe how irresponsible some people can be. telling a teenager to blow such a large sum of money on a car? that's epic.
It's not irresponsible if the kid feels like he can handle everything. I was just giving it to him straight. He will probably get one regardless of what we tell him so letting him know what's to be expected is the only thing we can all do. It's much better to do this than coming off as their parent and telling them where to spend it.
approx $300/mo or so for $30k of debt. man, what i could do with an extra $300/mo haha.

sure. better to encourage him to make a bad decision than to avoid the risk of coming off "as their parent".
there's a reason we're not considered adults until 18. i seriously doubt this guy's parents would EVER let him blow that money on a car. so, really, all this talk is just in fun anyway.
Do it. ABSOLUTLY my favorite car, and if you're not a stupid teenager like 70% of them you'll be fine. I bought my evo 9 when I was 16, and I take care of it like it's my baby. Don't be stupid and race everyone that revs at you, just enjoy the car and take care of it.
If you really want one, I doubt what everyone on here says will effect your choice. I daily drive mine and its held up very well and I've only done general matinance on it. For me insurance is $100 with no accidents and no tickets. Good luck, and if you do get one you'll never want to be away from it.

who do you go through? i, literally, have about 20 of us, over the age of 30 (and no tickets or accidents) that can't find full-coverage anywhere near that. i'd be down to save some money.

ahh. multi-policy discount. you gotta figure the costs of the other policies in there as well. i'm 41, single with a son, no accidents or tickets. 10kmi/yr (i think). State Farm wanted a LOT from me.
in regards to the post i was talking about when i said no way he'd get $100 insurance, i was assuming he was much younger, maybe a ticket, and didn't have 5 policies. LOL
apples to apples.

If I could get it lower I would! last year I drove the Evo...maybe 250 miles hahaha
Yeah, I don't really have many choices...owning a bully breed limits my options for home owners insurance.
Invest your money in an IRA or something, and focus on school.
this. so much this. you're going to wreck your first.. 5? cars. so get cheap ones. slow ones. volvo's are nice.
ps never speak to whoever it was that told you you have to 'clean turbos every 6 months'.
$30k should just about buy a 2 bedroom house in Florida right? at least throw it down as a deposit on an apartment or townhouse.. cars are a waste of money, for when you have money to waste.
OP HERE!
Wow how I am astonished by the amount of overwhelming responses. I take one day to study and no do anything else and I come back to two more pages of responses. I'd like to address many points considering the fact that many were brought up that weren't established prior to this. I'll try to make this as short as I can so people don't get too lost or bored in what I have to say. Instead of addressing everyone that responded individually I'm going to just respond in general by just listening facts. Please don't take any of these following things in a negative way nor think any less of me, thank you!
- Every year I receive a fair amount of money from relatives and family, I close to never spend it and it's accumulated fairly so I put it in a savings account. I don't spend it ever and I decided when I was little just to keep it for when I was older (Reinforced by my mother :P). What I'm trying to say is that I have a fair amount of money for after school and whatnot, also my mother and father have been saving for college since I was born specifically for Florida schools, I believe it's called "Bright Future's" I can't confirm, but basically if I don't go to a Florida school and graduate from a school outside of Florida I get all the money back which I will be using to pay off any loans, if I get any (Crosses Fingers)
- I've been wanting a relatively fast car ever since I was little and was addicted to anything I could get my hands on that was even close to driving.
- Another backstory, this is attempting to address the "irresponsibility of a teenager." I know it's incredibly cliche and annoying to hear ANY person under the age of 18 say, "I'm mature for my age." Hell, I get pissed off when I hear anyone in my class say that especially when all they do is complain about how difficult a class is. Anyways, I have a cousin (19) who owns a 350Z, and he let me drive it on the way to his house when he his mother had a family reunion. There was this ******** from my school who had this S14 with a disgustingly large muffler. Anyways, we were on a two lane road with a speed limit of 45 MPH. My step father, who if anyone read prior is a retired officer, told me it's okay to go 5 over because you can't get ticketed. So I was going 50, no big deal. But this guy was riding my *** the whole time because the car next to me was driving next to me. The guy behind me get on revving his annoying *** car trying to egg me on, hell even my cousin was ****ing around me with saying that I should racing him. For two reasons I didn't, it was illegal for me to be driving at the time because you have to be accompanied by an adult (21) and I know my mom would whoop the **** out of me. Basically, I'm not that irresponsible for a teenager, more than 90% of my school I'd say. Will I never go fast? HELL NO! It's obvious that if you have a car of that caliber and you never step on the gas a little bit it's a car wasted.
- College Funds; Satisfied to an extent, I'd say mostly.
- Job; I work a few hours during the weekend, not much.
- Discipline; Already covered, I'd hope.
- Kaj, the 30 K is for a car..As said before. Well possibly, it's up to me.
If there's any other questions to clarify anything once again please ask!
Just one more note; I don't think anyone really cares but I was speaking to my mother for the past two days about this since the day I turn 16 approaches sooner and sooner. She says that she appreciates that you people are assisting me in this and giving me life advice instead of just blatantly saying "No." Another thing that she told was that she wanted me to choose what I wanted to do with the money. She doesn't like treating me that much of a child, which is something a bad idea. She wants me to be independent in my choices and learn from my mistakes rather than her ruling over my life, if that makes any sense. She says I need to enjoy myself, but I'm just worried how things are going to go in the future. What a lot of you made sense to me and honestly, I'm not disregarding anything anyone has said because it would be rude to do so as well as childish. Everything that everyone has said has stuck with me, trust me, I've been thinking about it all a lot which is why I'm incredibly indecisive.
What one person said that really struck me, whether is be true or not, was the thing about everyone saying don't get the car because I might mistreat it in one manner or another. I know that that isn't the main reason I should not get the car because manner more things were brought up other than that but I do feel that that reason is and underlying one that everyone feels. I might be wrong and PLEASE do correct me if I'm wrong.
The thing with me is that I'm not just some little kid that wants this car because it's fast as ****. I want this car because it's a car I've loved for a long time, oh and side note.. It was the Evo 8 in NFSMW, but I still prefer the 9 :P. Anyways, back on track; I've loved this car for a while and I really feel that I would nurture this car as if it were family. I would not mind taking as much time out of my time to learn how to do maintenance myself.
OOPS! I don't think I addressed how modding will go with this car, I might be wrong but I don't think I did. I'm not planning on modding the car, at all. Maybe some cosmetics, DON'T WORRY NOT GOING TO RICE IT OUT.
Back on track, sorry :P.
I really don't want to be viewed as an ignorant kid who's reckless and careless about his future. It's difficult to be treated a little older than you are. I know it's unfair for me to ask and I completely understand all your perspectives since teenage boys are typically very reckless when it comes to driving, and I understand that so I can't expect any of you to view me a tad more mature than my age.
Once again, I really appreciate all responses to this post as it has enlightened me a lot and made me more educated than if I hadn't
Thank you,
RafaJW!
