Mitsubishi America Petition
Sure, nothing beats displacement. I still dream of owning an old Aston Martin V8 Vantage with the RSW 7.3 litre conversion:
That car would eat long stretches of Interstate for breakfast.
However, there's also something to be said for squeezing insane amounts of power out of a 2.0 litre. Call me a purist, but I was also annoyed that Subaru used their 2.5 litre engine in the STi. Why not the 2.2 litre they put in the real deal 22B-STi?
BTW the EVO VIII rally cars can be found in Group N.

Personally, I'll stick to my 03...I don't want nor need 6 gears or more computers interefering with my driving experience.

How do you guys know it's going to be at the New York Auto Show?? If it is going to be there, are they unveiling it for the US market?? Anyways, I agree with speedomodel about Subaru going with the 2.5 liter instead of the 2.2 liter of the 22B, that would have been much cooler I think. When is the New York Auto Show by the way?
I'm wondering if it's good thimg if Mitsu reads these forums.. There is more nonsesne here than Mitsu should bother with..
More displacement is always a good thing... Anyone can mess up a motor, especially on a first time out setup.. the STi's minor and less than frequent engine detonation issues have more to do with being a *new* motor than having 2.5L as opposed to 2.0L. Heck If Mitsu wants to cram a super small and lightweight non turbo 4.8L V8 for the same price as the current evo.. bring it on..
As for electronics. If you hate em so much , go unplug your ABS and ECU fuses and pick up a set of velocity stacks and carburators. I'm not as eager for AYC and SACD, but certainly would not turn them away.. I am more interested in a 6 speed, sequential manual transmission ( more electronic goodness to make it quicker), underbody aero panels, cruise control ( ahh electronic maids to make the trip to the track a non issue with the local authorities).. Throwing in tint from the factory and nice new mature colors would be real good.
The "Next Year" quotes of lesser production are way wrong. Please learn to pay attention/listen/read. The production has been increasing. The number of "2004" model allotment is less. Hopefully meaning that the "2004 " model year will start ASAP and end in only a few months.. like October. Then the "2005" model will be on sale so they are eligible for awards and it is in line with all the other cars in their lineup..
There should be a votes on each thread to indicate the remedial level of the content and the accuracy of the content...

Yeah, it seems that EVO production may be moving from calendar year, which is typical of most niche market cars. Of course, I have no idea what they are planning to do as far as that goes, but would be a reason for the decreased numbers for 2004, not because people aren't buying them. I wonder if Mitsu will keep the calendar year and introduce the next deal in March, or will they start introducing the new EVO models in August-October like most of the other manufacturers?

I actually agree with you on the electronics front. I don't want AYC, and if it came with AYC, it would likely come off, but I doubt that it will ship here with it. Of course, we don't know what it will come over with, but if AYC is all that our version lacks I'll be getting one. I know it doesn't make any sense to trade in the VIII, but I'm sick of the attention that the LY gets. No more eye attracting colors for me!

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't adding more displacement counterproductive to making the car as light as possible ?
Suby used a 2.5L to get the power while meeting emissions. And so far it seems to be a simple "patch." The aftermarket for the STi has been less than phenomenol (reliable whp over 300+? very few).
I don't see why Mitsu needs to up the size of the engine. The 4G63 is awesome as it is, and it's not the engine that we're not getting anyway, it's the other goodies - the "technical" goodies that make the Evo7/8 what they are over the Evo6 - those active differentials! It may not sound like a big deal, but what other consumer car with active differentials can be had for under $30K?
EDIT: Perhaps under $35 or $40K would be the correct price.

Go on being so naive as to belive that only domestics use displacement to improve driveablility and low end torque.. Mercedes. Nissan.. You have to understand and appreciate all automobiles to comprehend their pros and cons.
But thankfully everyone is entitled to an opinion, it helps to see their own comprehensability.
What really cracks me up is that most of you seem to want all the extra bull**** of Sequential Shift, AYC, ACD and all the other junk but will never actually put it to much use. Sequential Shift is just an automatic for pussies. I don't give a damn if it's faster, cause I don't race my car every mile of it's life. I would much rather row through the gears and drive like a man. And AYC and ACD? ****...learn the limits of your car and how to drive it and you will never need either of these two money-robbing gadgets.
How can you call yourself a purist when you want the entire car to do all the work for you?

Yes, for the true race driver, he might not want/need the active diffs because he knows the car like the back of his hand. For he who can hit the apex everytime and who can threshold brake like nobody's busines. But like I said, very few people are like that.
The ACD/SAYC is for the enthusiast. The autox-er, the occasional track day, etc. Hell, even frequent trackers may find the ACD/SAYC useful. Don't tell me that more than half of the WRC rally cars don't use active diffs.

Techs that are at least closer to answers than the Mitsu techs who have to try and get an interpretter to get any help with the Evo.. If Ford could bring a car that looked good had a nice flat torque curve, no turbo lag 400 hp, AWD, and handling that knocked everyone out of the ring, yah that would be quite a supurb package for enthusiasts.. Does it matter what emblem is stuck on the car? If so you're not an enthusiast. Enthusiast are about the capabilites. Aware of the inner and under pinnings, both pros and cons, but not elitist or naive as to think there is any *perfectly best* solution to any automotive parameter.

A 5 door Focus WRC style would be really nice. Ford has been dropping the ball big time lately focusing too much on their GT.. talk about a niche market.. I'm doubtful any of the 1500 or so of those would be enticing or even remotely practical for the masses..
But on the owners front for the Evo.. The owners who knew what they were getting are the ones who are out at the track very often. Those that were kidding themselves are getting themselves out of the Evo.. The evo is a niche car. It is not a car for everyone. But the really cool thing about it is, it is practical. And it is versatile as well. Try taking a GT3 down a gravel road.. sideways.. most niche cars are not practical and very limited in scope. This for the aware potential owners is a remarkable combination.
It reminds me of strippers who got famboozeled into buying Z06s.. Those quickly got traded into something more practical yet still as much a waste of finances, like escalades. At least they could still spend lots of money making themselves "feel/think" they got more becuase they spent more. At least now though they had something useful and not as uncomfortable or quirky as a performance oriented vehicle.
Also, more evo owners are out learning the limits of their car than this small portion of owners suggest. This place is a small portion of the younger, more interested in trying to buy themselves more performance than acquiring skills set. Most folks here represent the younger folks who got one and have little intention or means to fully understand what the car is all about. Not all, but all too many. Most evo owners at circuit racing events don't know anything about this place or really have any concern or care to know. They are out enjoying there Evo when not spending time with their families or toiling away at professional affairs. Just like in the rest of the world, most owners are seen running their Evos round and round at different circuits each weekend..
