Evo 9 Trans Rebuild cost?

So Reverse is grinding badly ( Learned that if you shift from 3rd to reverse it actual stops the grinding) but it needs to be rebuilt. I was quoted at 2500.00 and that includes labor and a stage 2 clutch as well. Since this is my first Trans rebuild i wanted to see is 2500 an okay price or too expensive? Thank you .

I would just send it out to TRE... Best pricing for the quality and strength of the build.

You're in IL so it's probably a toss up between Michigan for TRE and Ohio for Shep.

Personally, I love my sheptrans transmission, but either will be a good choice.

For cost, it would depend on what clutch they are putting in with it. There is a wide range ($500-1500) for clutches. And it sounds like labor too?

Either place will start at about $1k for the basic transmission rebuild and then go up from there depending on how you specialize it.

Depending on your budget and mileage on the vehicle, maybe look into having the transfer case freshened up while the transmission is out as well. But that is relatively easy to do on the side so you don't HAVE to do it.

Isn't it common for these cars to grind into reverse? I have it here and there if I don't put it into first and then slowly put it in reverse....

No need to rebuild a transmission if your transmission grinds in reverse......

Does it grind every time you try to put it in reverse? Or just when the engine is cold. Most manual transmission don't have synchronizers on reverse gears. So if you just fired up the engine at it's in cold start and idling at 2000 rpm it tends to grind. Mine does that and I only have 47k miles on it.

Mine always had issues going into reverse. Going from neutral to first then to reverse would get it in there

These are the prices for Shep to do it. It is all on their website though, but for convenience I will list it all here. Of course this is all for the basic options so if you want/need to add anything, the cost will go up.

Transmission rebuild $1045
Transfer Case rebuild $349
Exedy HD clutch $491
Labor $500

Thats if nothing else is broken. When I sent in my trans they said it would be 3100 for repairs so I just bought a brand new one and had them modify it bill was 4k with billet output shaft. Shep buys pallets of new transmissions from mitsu fyi.

Are you looking to have a upgraded rebuild? S1, S2? I'd recommend Sheps, they rebuilt my TC, no problems at all.

On cold start I have to let the clutch out and spin the input shaft before the transmission will shift into reverse. I bought the car new and it has always been this way. It doesn't seem to me worth repairing.

My built trans shifted perfectly into reverse at first. One whoops at the track trying to go 3-4, and ground reverse instead and my trans is back to being like barneyb. Either have to slightly engage the clutch as I'm putting the trans in reverse, or select 1st or 4th, then put it in reverse. Oh well. It's not a big deal.
