You're right Op. That's an 88-91 era SOHC 4G63.
The valve cover is the same as the 1.8 4G37 which is likely what is eliciting confusion, however that engine was not used in that Galant. The 4G37 that looks like that was in the Eclipse base model.
Absolutely 100% 4G63 in the pic.

It's a 4g63. Don't forget this post isn't to find out what engine it was. I know I saw it. But thanks for the input. This post is just to share something interesting I found in person if I might add.

It amazes me how people who have never seen something before can be such experts. Evo/Eclipse people have a hard time understanding that the 4G63 did not always have a twin cam and existed long before them.
The 89-91 era used in the Galant looked like above with the 1,8 valve cover design (as did the early 80's 4G63s), the ~92-ish up had a valve cover like the 4G64, and of course the twin cam that everyone here is familiar with has the Eclipse style valve cover used in the VR4.
Don't sweat the peanut gallery jb988, this place is full of know it alls .

funny you say that being i have owed all year models of dsms from 90 to 92 which is the one i have currently and all the valve covers have been the same. I have seen my share of 1.8 liter cars too being working on them or helping others with theirs. I know the difference in appearance. And the only gallant that came with the 4g engine was the vr4. Regardless of how this argument goes cool find. Not many gallants are still around and have always been cool
As far as knowing the difference by appearance... then you should know there a few obvious differences in the picture.
-The 4G37 does not have the air baffle the 4G63 has that is clearly visible in the picture.
-The 4G37 had the cooling system cap mounted on the water neck in all years, the SOHC 4G63 had the cooling system cap mounted on the radiator.
-The 4G37 valve cover has the oil cap mounted in between the two hold-down nuts; the SOHC 4G63 has the oil cap mounted fully in the corner outside of the hold down nuts.
There is probably more, but I think the point is made.
