I've screwed up my Transfer Case!!!!

Yeh well, the decel wine started the last time I drove it, this weekend i got to checking oil, as I got under it and opened up the file hole, and then lowered it, nothing came out, bugger it, I got my pump and diaqueen out and pumped another 200mil in before it became full. So I've run it low on oil for a year, I should have read the Jacks warning on their web site where they say it takes time for the oil to get down and its very dangerous to just try and fill up the TC with out letting the oil settle, even taking it for a run then jacking and put more oil in. So anyone out there filling your TC for the first time be warned don't just blunder into it like I did, I am so angry with myself.

I took it back out for a run with the right oil in but I could still hear it, under normal cruising its hardly there at all, until you start to punt it around corners and use engine braking then it becomes louder, then quietens up back when your cruising home.

Should I just leave it for now until it gets bad and I can hear it under normal cruising? or should I pull it down, I'd like to attempt at rebuilding it myself, has anyone had a go at doing this?

Not sure if I understand how that happened. No TC oil at all??

Factory manual notes 0.63 quarts. When I have done my TC, I made sure at least that much went in
I would run it w/the refill for some miles before deciding to tear down

Yup you have to fill and wait, fill and wait, fill and wait, drive it in gear, fill and wait.

Always takes me about an hour or so to do it right.

0.63 quarts = 0.59 litres and I put at lest 0.2 litres in it so it was running low by about a third

Since it has been run low for awhile, new fluid is a good idea.

Yes, a new fill would be best. Save a sample in a water bottle just in case

Make an adapter with 3/8 pipe thread (it threads into the drain hole) to hose barb. Pump a FULL quart into the tcase through the drain hole. Quickly plug it. Drive the car easy at 20-30mph for 1-2 miles. Then remove the FILL plug and allow the excess fluid to drain out until there is just a slow/moderate dribble coming out. Plug it up. You're done. Takes me 20 minutes to do this...

Good idea....I'll have to remember that. Do you pump it in or just gravity feed it?

Pump it in, the whole quart. Guaranteed it's overfilled. So event the little bit you lose when removing the fill apparatus and shoving the plug in it's still overfull.

Idk what G70, but unless it magically replaces what's bad, it's not going to do much...lol.

$2k seems steep. It's only about 4hrs work to remove and reinstall the tcase. $1k for rebuild and then an alignment...

Unfortunately here in far away Australia we get ripped off with any work required on these, that's why I am wondering if I can do this myself.

Yanking the transfercase isn't too bad. Just need to have the tool (or make one) to pull the stub shaft out of the driver side of the trans.

I'm starting to do some research, I took it out again for a run with the Nulon goop in it, didnt really make a difference, loud weeerrrring noise on decel, I bet its the ring and pinion.

This is a good thread
