Advice on 2006 Evo 9 MR

Hey, first time using the forums, was wondering if I could get some advice on whether or not I should buy this Evo 9. It is the MR trim, with the 6 speed and all that.

The owner (Who I know pretty well, and they seem like the kind of person that would take care of it) is asking 10k for the car, which may seem low, but there is a reason. The car has 150k miles, which I've been told by a few of my friends is pretty high for these cars.

The car is 100% stock, and always has been. So, my question is, Is this a good buy?
I'm looking to daily this car, possibly even driving it in the winter (depending on the condition of my Crown Vic at the time)

Do you guys think this car would be reliable with 150k miles, comepletly bone stock?

I'll update the post with more information on the car once I get the info from the owner. According to him, he has put a lot of work into the car, I'm not exactly sure what yet.
All I want to know is, should I even bother to continue to look at this car, with 150k on it?

Thanks for taking the time guys, hope to hear back from somebody on this.

10k is a very good deal if this car has been well maitained. 150k miles for an 11 year old car is still below average if the car has been a daily driver.. Is this friend of yours the sole owner of the car or have there been other owners? how long has he owned it? if not has the car been in an any accidents? There are things you check just like any other car purchase..

has maintenance been done on the car as required? oil, transmission service, timing belt, water pump, etc.

what mods are on the car? you say stock but people have different variations of what is considered stock for an an Evo.. ask him.

how is the body of the car? dents, scratches etc. is the car garaged or not? How is the interior of the car?

like I said at the beginning.. if the car is clean and all the things at very minimum have been kept then 10k is a good deal. Post of the pic of the car if you have one or ask him for a pic of the engine bay and also post it.

as for a daily driver, that is somewhat subjective... many people here DD their Evos but if you plan on modding the car to some extent it can still be a decent DD but don't expect great MPGs... but that is kinda of a moot point if you have a Crown Vic which are not great on that front either.

Well, without knowing more, that MR is well below Blue Book. That MR should list for 14K plus. Most older EvO's are selling for a bit more than Kelly from what Ive seen

There maybe more to this MR than you know (salvage title?) Anyway, if its clean & the drivetrain is OK, grab it

Even if you have to do an engine rebuild or other mechanical it may be worth it

Thanks for the opinion on the car, I can give a bit more information than I left out before.

He is not the sole owner of the car, there was 1 person before him. He has shown me receipts for maintenance, timing belt, water pump, all of that routine stuff for higher-mileage cars.

When he said the car was stock, he really meant it, according to him it's never had anything aftermarket on it, aside from an air filter... Even the exhaust is stock (which I usually think of as a good thing, quieter exhaust usually means it was gassed less for noise).

The body of the car is very clean, no rust, very minimal scratches, and only a few dents. The car has not been in any collisions, and has been garaged (while he has owned iit, he doesn't know about before then)

I do not plan on building the car whatsoever, but using it more as a daily (I love stock cars, especially ones like these!)

Thanks for the info and stuff, hopefully this information helps somewhat to whoever else looks at the thread, I am waiting for more information like whats been done to the car, etc. from the owner, will post it when I get it.

(The price does seem a bit worrying to me, like there's something to hide, but he say's he is selling it for the lower price because he knows me, and because he has it priced for quick sale, but you can't believe everything somebody says who is selling a car)

On the note of having something to hide, is there anything I should look at in specific when looking at an Evo 9, anything from typical rust spots from engine/trans stuff

Do a compression test and pull the licp to make sure it's not leaking oil through the turbo if both are good buy it.

Will bring along a compression tester when I go to look at the car, and by pulling the LICP to make sure its not leaking, you mean the pipe from the intercooler to the turbo, to check out the turbo, correct?

I would deff do a compression test and also make sure it shifts good throughout all gears. If car wasn't beaten then the trans should be ok. As many people say the 6 speed trans is not as strong as the 5 speed... I've never had any problems with my 6 speed and I have 100k on car.

It sounds like it has been maintained very well, that price is scary low though. I'm sure a friend wouldn't be trying to scam you either. I'd recommend the same stuff everyone else has, and then maybe take it into a local shop you trust and have them look it over. That $100 inspection has saved me thousands in a few situations.

Yes and also have a keen ear for TC whine and any gear box syncro issues

I would make sure the 3 ACD lights aren't lit . that was the problem when I bought my evo. i didn't know what it meant at the time so i thought it was fine and now i have to replace the ACD pump on my car which isn't what i would prefer to be spending my saved up car money on :/

You know that just means you don't have the ability to switch modes right? You don't necessarily need to get it fixed. I've had my 3 lights on for about a year now.
Also if you are going to get it fixed, look into relocating it to the trunk to help prevent the same issue arising again. It's a bit more expensive in addition to rebuilding the pump but may be worth it.

To the OP, that car sounds like a steal if everything checks out

Per the service manual, when all 3 ACD lights are illuminated, that is an indication of a problem detected w/the system

There are numerous problem codes associated w/an ACD failure.

You have to scan the system or read the blink codes to determine what is the issue is

10k is a suspiciously low price. that car should be closer to 16-18k if it's almost completely stock and as clean as you say.

Well at 6-8k difference he would probably have enough saved to fix/replace what needs replacing, unless the car is literally a rolling wreck (which seems unlikely from the description).
