Re-Painting Bilsteins

Had a set of low mileage Bilsteins I got about 6 years ago. Didn't do much with
them until now. The paint right at the welds did not stick well, and was pealing
off in certain spots.

Cleaned them up and then spent a whole bunch of time trying to figure out
what paint color comes close. Seems there is at least 2 or 3 different shades of
yellow for Bilsteins, with EVO's being a brighter shade (vs many that are
more school bus yellow shade).

Anyway, I only painted below the "Bilstein" sticker on the rears, but entire
struts for fronts. Pics of struts and spraycan label I found, that is a bit
brighter, but pretty close overall.

I called the official rebuilder for Bilsteins, and they sold me the official paint they use! I had to beg them to sell them to me, but they finally did! I bought a box which is 4 spray cans. I am not using Bilsteins anymore, so if anyone is interested in any of the cans, let me know!

Would you be able to post up the brand and color of the paint for future reference? This will come in handy later on.

I used tractor paint, was pretty close and extremely durable.
I sold those to someone for cheap because I was nice.

Very nice! The Bilsteins look great. The stock Bilsteins are tough to beat, with such great daily drivability and performance.

So, u want me to give u all the info. on something that took me over a month of practically begging the official Bilstein rebuild shop to sell me? And even if i put up all the info., they dont sell to the public. You cant buy this in your local paint shop. I'm sorry, but that doesn't seem fair. If anyone is interested, please PM me. I paid $40.00 per can, plus shipping, for the 'privilage! I won't charge that!

I think even Bilstein service said they use "John deere yellow 1816"

Even if it may have slight difference, I wouldn't care at all, as no one is really interested in whether Bilstein paint color is matching the original or not.

My bad for hitting a nerve but a simple yes or no would have sufficed. This was info that I felt would benefit the Evo community as a whole. That is all.

I'll go take a look at my Bilsteins and let you know if I need a can or two.

I totally understand where you are coming from...I wasn't 'yelling' (can u do that in a message? Lol), I was just considering all the research it took me to find the official rebuild shop, and calling them relentlessly and beg them to let me buy a few cans.... If you are interested, I can send you photos...

I know the conversation has been centered around achieving the right color, but what struck me from the beginning is this:

Just dont see how a rattle can paint job is going to live in the North East w/the road salts & even worse the Mag Chlorides used.
I have years of professional undercoat experience & anything less than a powder coat or a soft under coat will not last

I do commend you on the hard work & all the toil that took place

The purpose of the forum is to share info like that. It's not like you designed a new internal engine setup (stroke/rod length/piston design, cams, whatever) that works better than whats currently available. You found some spray paint that's going to be flaking off again in 6-12 months.

My EVO has never seen snow and only seen rain twice.
I have this for the snow (or bugout from zombies)

Anyway, if it saw any snow, I would not have bothered to paint them at all
