Total noob that needs some guidance

Hi guys,

I've always wanted to own an Evo 8/9 ever since I was a kid because it looked so darn cool. I'm a business major that's just about to graduate and will be working full time for a firm which means I'll be able to make some money to afford an Evo!

Before I buy or even consider getting the car, I'm honestly a clueless dummy in terms of cars. I know it gets pretty extensive in terms of gear and parts, so I want to make sure I know what I'm doing once I get an Evo.

Can any of you guys point me in the right direction(since none of my pool of friends care for cars) and give me some resources to learn some knowledge about cars - specifically Evo 8/9s?

Thanks guys!

Your doing the right thing researching the car ahead of time! Your going to do well I can tell. Aside from your own personal education on the car/platform i would highly advise you do some research on finding a good local shop that has a lot of experience with Evo's or at least the AWD Turbo 4cylinder platform in general. Your going to need to rely on them to do a thorough Pre-Purchase inspection for you, to help you avoid making a huge mistake and buying someone else's money pit. Its kind of in the nature of these cars that they get beat on pretty hard and modded very frequently so getting a really good comprehensive pre-purchase inspection is crucial.

Thanks! I'll definitely have a look. But it still seems pretty comprehensive to me. Any idea where I can start from rock bottom? Engine.. transmission etc :P the modding seems cool but my knowledge seems too shallow to comprehend the vocab!

Thanks! So in terms of the pre-purchase inspection, lets say if I were go down to the States and privately buy a car off of a person (I hear that I shouldnt buy from a dealership). I can't really bring the mechanic with me right? So in that case what would I do?

EVOM has the best info around, but you have to read the Wiki on the EVO as well

You make an arrangement with a local qualified shop to have it inspected at the date/time you come down. I would only advise doing this once you have already decided you want to buy the car, pending good PPI results. If the seller has any problems with having a PPI performed then thats a massive red flag. You could probably also work it out to where the seller brings it in for the PPI before you commit to coming down, this might be a little less likely though as people don't necessarily want to be wasting their time if the buyer might flake.

That makes sense. I'm not planning on tuning it but I'm more interested in the aesthetics of an Evo. The most I'll do would be to change the exhaust or body kit so it looks nice. Not necessarily making it fast since my area is pretty strict! So I guess some sort of knowledge would be appropriate :P Thanks for your help!

Your welcome. Even if you plan to keep it 100% stock, there are many nuances to the platform that can cost you a lot of money to fix. Things you would never be able to discern for something like a "test drive". Stuff you really need to get the car in the air to get a real idea of the condition of. Which is why i so heavily promote the PPI.
