Brought a evo! now i need your help!

HI GUYS.
New to the site, first post took me about 20 mins to get my way around the thing... anyway finally here now. So please bear with me as I don’t know my way around yet (almost emailed myself at one point)
So going to keep the story short as I can... then ill state a few things I need advice on.
I BROUGHT An EVOoooooo!!!
Right that’s that story part over and done with.
Spec of the car:
Tein superstreet coil overs
Hks ssqv blow off
Hks hardpipe system
Custom 3” straight through pip with 4 ½ tip
Ebc discs and pads
Cambelt and balance shaft changed at 65 (currently on 70ish)
Excedy racing clutch
Hks big intercooler and pipework
Hks induction kit
Mechanically engine is mint got it inspected 3 times.
Last dyno 418bhp@6850rpm and 376.8ftlbs@4950rpm (haven’t done myself yet due to issues)
I have 2 cars so wouldn’t like to say it’s a DD car but I do drive a lot and I do drive hard shall we say... hopefully plan to take it out on the track once she’s mended.
Since I’ve had the car the exhaust has fallen apart cowboys welded the gaskets and the gaps were almost 5mm all round on both the gaskets a lot of power loss!... got that all done properly now its perfect.
Alternator belt somehow slipped and started tearing its self by rubbing against the cam cover. Literally on 1 thread on the way home from Brecon. Issue now resolved.
Now what I have left to do atm and need your expert advice on...
  • My brake squeal like hell sometimes it’s really frustrating and shameful if I’m honest. There is a lot of pad left to. Any solutions to this? Or recommendations of what to go for to avoid this or make it less attention seeking...

  • Also I’m having an issue with 3rd gear a lot. I have noticed it go in smoothly but other times it grinds really hard and refuses to go in... Mainly happens when I’m downshifting or higher revs. Am I doing something wrong? Or anything I can get sorted at the local garage?

  • CLUTCH! I’m told it’s a excedy racing clutch.. Since I’ve had the car I noticed the lightest slip didn’t think much of it... (To excited tbh) now getting worse. Tbh what ever it was it was sh*t. The more I was driving the car the more it was slipping... no longer driving atm till clutch is fixed. What clutch do you guys recommend? Do I need to change anything else with it Flywheel etc? I drive hard but also do some city miles. What should I be looking for to support my needs for the car and well as the power I’m producing? I doubt ill ever go over 500bhp im happy where I am but may make a few more subtle improvements. I have looked at a lot of threads and I mean a lot but they all contradict each other due to everyone having an opinion... what is best for my scenario? Also.. I would possibly like one to take some launches and someone explain how they are done properly to help me look after the car so nothing else breaks. ive only done 1 launch and that was me just dumping the clutch.. (yes I know..)
There are a few other things I want done atm but unfortunetly the clutch is my main priority right now just to get back on road.
Thanks in advance for your response I know it was abit of a read.. but where else is better than here to seek advice aye?.. haha
Any advice would be great at well and pointing me in the right direction for purchase.

I will post some pics when I can also.. with bits ive done so far but the car is still not the way I want it the. shoes it on, engine bay, interior etc but ill keep you updated on how my changes go.

Welcome! Car looks great!

Some answers to your questions:

* Brake squeal can happen if the car sat for a period of time and rust built up on the rotors, it's particularly bad if the rotors are drilled or slotted. When my evo was parked for a bit, they sounded like the world was ending.
A couple or real hard brakes should get rid of any rust buildup.

* Third gear isn't really known as a problem gear unless it gets damaged (5th gear is known to grind after a certain amount of hard driving/ mileage due to its single syncro)
You are probably going to want to do what barneyb said above and look into rebuilding/building (more recommended) the transmission.

*Clutch.... yeah there are many differing opinions on this topic but a great bet would be an Exedy twin disk. it will hold all the power you plan on making as well as allow for launching without wearing out suuper fast. That's my recommendation at least.

Hope that helps!

thanks jmills more than helped! I was looking towards the exedy twin disk.. and any recommendations on where to purchase? should I change the flywheel aswel? lost interest in cost now.. I just want the car back on road with the perfect clutch for what suits me.
looking at the car makes me emotional..

with brakes I think im going to buy a new full set. found some miltek black coated disks and brembo pads.. few reviews have said they are pretty good - minimal squeal.

your right might as well get the tranny looked at while its out.

thanks for your help!!!

Exedy Twin disk clutches come with a flywheel when you buy them so that's 2 birds with one stone (that phrase may mean something else in the UK). As far as where to buy them, my go to place in the US is Street Tuned Motorsports (http://www.streettunedmotorsports.co...rain_page1.htm) but there may be a better option for you elsewhere.

I would also recommend exedy twin disc. Some people say its hard to drive on the street but I really enjoy it and it feels light to me. I would also reccomend deleting a clutch pill when you switch out the clutches since youre going to have to at least bleed the clutch anyway.

The clutch pill delete is free and easy and should improve pedal feel!

As with the 3rd gear issue I would reccomend building the transmission if possible. It can be quite expensive. But if you send it to the right shop they can build the transmission for you and that is worth while peace of mind. (I run buschurs 5-speed)

Welcome and enjoy your evo!

http://www.evomoto.com/tech_articles...h_article_id=4 This is a good how to article to delete the clutch pill and also switch to a braided clutch line.

I will have to check. I bought an MR but the 6 speed is much weaker compared to the 5 speed (i have a 5 speed in it now). Or at least thats been what i have been told. I would recommend that if you have the money go to the 5 speed because it would give you less problems. I don't know how much power you can safely make with a 6 speed. Other people will be able to give you a more detailed explanation sorry.

-Change pads out to something quieter

-If adjusting the clutch pedal doesn't help, rebuild your transmission.

-I'd opt for an OS Giken clutch over the Exedy. At this point if you're going to get your trans rebuilt it'll be easier and cheaper to put the clutch in at the same time.

Mitsubishi sells parts for 5 speeds and assemblies for 6 speeds. So, not going to be inexpensive.

Congrats on your purchase! Electric blue is starting to grow on me. If I get another Evo that's probably the color I look for

I remember reading where somebody did a search on the selling price of used cars based on paint color and found blue fetched the highest price.
