Been thinking of if I should trade my STI for an Evo. Been researching and pretty much my goals favor towards an evo. I plan to autocross and the only "pros" sti has over an evo is the interior and exhaust note. I really don't care about any of that which is why I am thinking of getting an evo. I was offered a bone stock 2006 Evo 9 MR but he says there is a "false code" P301, for misfire on cylinder 1 and that compression and leak down tests are good. Some things that are keeping me back is the money I already put into the STI but I don't want to end up having to rebuild again and would rather have to rebuild an evo tranny instead. Also what I don't like about the STI is that it was painted a two tone color from previous owner. It is orange bottom and black top, it's not cut off at a good point either, black starts top of doors and up. Are there anything I should look out or research more into, concerning the misfire code on cylinder 1?
Should I trade the STI for the Evo 9 MR or wait for a 5 speed offer or just keep the STI, repaint it and prep it for track?

Sorry for the long post but any help is greatly appreciated!
I recently came from a 2014 WRX hatch, and I have no regrets. The things I didn’t like about the Subaru were mainly the fact that is felt a little numb, they are A LOT more common, and it’s not as easy to make big power with. I moved into a 2006 Evo 9 MR and love it. Hope this helped.

How is the evo so far? I'm kind of debating on the trade as well, because the evo 9 is a 6 speed and I have no knowledge on evos but from what I read online, 5 speed is the way to go.
If you plan on 500whp/350+wtq, turning into a drag race car/half-mile car, then yes.
My plans are to autocross and start road racing in the future. Would I run into problems with the 6 speed? I rather have something right the first time around instead of running into future problems is all.

If you are planning on more than 350wtq, then I'd run a 5spd. I did lots of AX and HPDE with my 6spd. The only reason I'm going with a 5spd is because the 6 I have now was a POS when I bought it and I can't afford to have it rebuilt. Unfortunately, I have to go to a 5spd, but only until I can save up the money to rebuild the 6.
I made the switch from the STI to the MR several years ago. For me, the MR was a better track car with the steering/vehicle providing better feedback, and handling better with less understeer. However the STI was a better streetcar. I don't think you can go wrong with either one. Also, I've seen a lot of posts on the 5 speed versus 6 speed - you won't have problems with a 6 on the track (I don't know about drag), and the ratios on the 6 are better for track work.
I owned a '13 STI before picking up my 9 MR and I agree. I liked my STI a lot, great car but I LOVE my Evo and would choose it over a STI any day. Its much more reliable, handles much better, and feels more raw/race car. Its also much much cheaper to mod and make power. Considering you have a '04 STI, interior quality shouldn't even be a concern they are the same. Also I love the 6 speed lol

So far the Evo is great. Mine is a 6 speed and it’s nice, but down the road I’m planning on 600 plus whp, so I will swap it out to a 5 speed.
