Undercoat?

Hey everyone,

so as we all know, ours Mitsubishis are like a Rust magnets. Specifically, being a Northeastern car, the underneath of my car isn't so pretty. Just curious if anyone has used Undercoat or anything like that to prevent rust and would recommend it? Thanks!

There's seven products on the sgrpi web site so is there one you recommend?

We have been using the SG-500 G (grey) & SG-500B (black) for years (over 20 years) It can be bought in aerosol cans & spray gun applications

Joe- I might have to reach out to that company and see if I can pick up a couple cans of it. Do you know if they sell to the general public? There are a ton of coating on the market but its hard to know which ones are decent vs mostly marketing fluff.

And would you say its very similar to the coating that is used from the factory? I think you saw the pictures in my build thread but if not I have a small area under the driverside floorboard where when I removed the sound deadening there was rot under it., So Im in the process of cutting that out and replacing it but part of that fix is sealing the underside with a coating that looks proper and will keep it protected. Thanks!

Hey Joe,

Thanks for prompt response. Ill reach out and see what they say. Im known to be very persuasive so if its a good product I'd love to get my hands on a couple cans of it

And to the OP I feel your pain. One thing I can't stress enough is that you must do your homework on the topic as a lot of rubberized coatings could end up doing more harm than good. The key is to remove all of the rust prior to coating so it doesn't trap in the moisture. I've read about some rust encapsulater type products or rust conversion type products like POR15 that you can treat the rusted areas with and it should convert it to a more "stable" form. I used POR15 on my core support but I opted to grind down the rust prior so Im not even sure my use case is advised.

That being said do your research and like most things it's all in the prep!
