Buying a beat evo 8/9

So I’m in the market for a new car and I've been looking at the evo 8/9 as a potential car if i can find one. My curiosity lays in if there are any out there that have high miles, rusted or the body/ interior is rough with a mostly stock motor that haven’t already been parted out or left to rot in somebody’s back yard. The reason being that i want something that needs work and wont be normal evo price so preferably below 10k since I'm going to college for auto and having the schools body shop work on rust free of charge besides materials. The plan is to find one for relatively cheap and attempt to restore it to stock and usable as a “reliable” daily.

Sorry if this is in the wrong thread or just a waste of time looking for a evo in the stated condition but any advice helps.

They are hard to find and can be pricey no matter what. But they are certainly out there.

Keep an eye out and have money ready to go. Good deals don't last long and almost any evo with a full running drivetrain will probably run you close to 10k.

Watch the FS threads here on EVOm and join facebook evo buy/sell groups.

Hey welcome aboard

Hoping youre searching for a the EvO as a 2nd weekend / track car?

Find a good FL / GA car if you can that has not been driven in the winter wet. Wont find anything running for 10K unless its totally beat / salvaged.

EvO prices have accelerated upwards

Thanks for the info, i haven't done much research on rebuilding the 4g63 if I were to get one with a bad motor but if thats an option it’s possible considering the college is able to machine the block if necessary if it means getting the car cheaper. That way i can start with a fresh rebuild.

While no rust/ clean body would be nice and probably the best route, It wont help save money for me sadly. I will have access to a full body shop for free so as long and no major unibody damage is present and whatever rust or imperfections can be corrected, patched or painted any condition is okay.
As for the motor, running isnt a necessity while it would be great I do plan on going over the wiring and possibly rebuilding it for longevity. It will be used as a daily in the north east which i know is a sad thing to hear because of rust but i do plan to minimalize this by undercoating the bottom and exposed steel with fluid film in the winter and doing a ceramic coating over the paint.

Continue checking the for sale forum here, but also keep an eye on the Facebook groups that are selling Evos across the country. I’ve seen a few good deals, but they get picked up quick.

The problem is so many of these cars are rusted anyway that the price has somewhat shifted to accommodate that. Now if an eastern Evo is priced around the mid teens its assumed that mild rust will be likely. Even the salvaged title cars don't seem to provide much of a discount.
There are good deals that pop up from time to time for non/barely running cars with decent parts but dealing with someone else's project can be a pain.
Like someone else ITT said, have the money and logistics ready to go quick.

There is a clean 03 going for 10k OBO on craigslist near me in Cali. 186k, whining T case and blown turbo, but looks great other than that! They are out there

Search in the rustbelt states, you're going to be more likely to find a budget one in any state that uses salt and has harsh winters
