Buying an 2006 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution IX

Hi All,

I'm looking to buy an Evo for the first time and would like to get an evo owner's perspective on this post:
http://www.tarcusmotorco.com/vehicle...c33c37025cf845

I plan on checking the car on Saturday and would like to know if its a decent buy.

I asked the dealer and they said that the block and head were never modified.

The only thing he mentioned that it has an exhaust and an intake. (it looks like an injen intake system).

But i also saw that it has a mishimoto radiator.

I live in CA and this was originally a CA car.

I asked the dealer why the previous owner sold it and he mentioned that he doesn't know because they got the car from another dealership.

The car is in Oregon and I'm willing to fly there to check out the car.
On paper it looks clean but I have never owned one so I wouldn't know everything about it to look out for.

I got the carfax from the dealer and it looks like it was taken care of before it was sold.

I currently own a 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer OZ Rally 5 Speed and i'm mechanically inclined.

I've rebuilt the head twice so I have some experience with cars.

I would like to get the experts opinion on this!

Really looking forward to owning an evo myself.

My brother who was also in the market for one we went and looked at this one we live in Oregon PS it does seem stock and stock rom I own a built IX and this car drove good but I would do the timing belt water pump and everything ASAP because they had no info on it...
i would also point out I believe it’s on lowering springs I couldn’t tell to well because I don’t remember what my car was stock ride height lol but it was a nice car didn’t seem like the clutch slipped or anything....
My brother ended up wanting something with more power and had a good platform to build up further on so he went with an evo 8 I will say the seats and interior was in really nice shape on this car.
I would try to get them to go down on price with not knowing about the service life on it.....

^^^Good info

@dwightnava

Yeah, looks pretty good. The downside is that its being sold by the dealer who has no history on the car. The upside is the price is not too bad but imagine they may have purchased this EvO for $15K to $17K

EvO10 wheels & the radiator, upper intake & open intake. Inside you can see an incomplete gauge pkg in the lower console?

Keep us posted but does looking inviting

It has the air bag recall open. Be sure to get that fixed by the Mitsu dealer

Too many miles for the price. I got mine with nearly 100k less miles for $4k more. Keep on searching.

For sure I will get the car serviced for a water pump and timing belt.
Once I take it home I will do the routine maintenance and possibly check the condition of the fluids.

I tried asking them about the condition of the car, but they got the car from a dealer auction.

All I can go by are what are listed on CARFAX.

I will try to see if I can get the price down to around 17-18 since this is what is listed on KBB for the same mileage.

Yeah, the salesman told me they got it from a dealer auction for a good price.

I can only assume they are trying to get at least 5k more for what they paid for.

I will have to check what else is modified about the car.

I'll keep you guys posted

I heard about the infamous transfer case for these cars.

Thanks for the heads up.

I'll try to look for whining or anything abnormal about the drivetrain.

I really don't mind the miles.

This is a car i plan on keeping forever and if needed I can get the long block rebuild/reinforced.

My budget is 20k or less and as long as the mileage is less than 150k.

This cause my eye because I saw another listing that sold near me for 21k OTD with 157k miles lol

Plenty of Evos pop up for sale in the Socal area. This is a bad deal at the stated asking price. It should be sold for 16k - 17k. Check compression and do a leak down test. It's not fun to buy the car and then have to do major repairs right off the bat.

Saw the car today and they were firm at 20k

some other mods:
lowering tein springs (shocks are shot on the front right)
tires are oversized and is rubbing on the fender liners up front.
Fenders were rolled
There are signs of grinding when shifting to 5th. It does not grind when you rev match.
JDM mod for the headlights
sideskirts are stretched out to follow the body of the car
straight piped ( they were going to give me a cat for CA)
injen intake with CARB sticker
when driving my friend did notice a boost leak and was fluttering at high rpms but I don’t know anything about boost leaks so I just take his word on it
evo was tuned by a guy from Sacramento (forgot his name)
Interior is in good condition
it has an aem AFR gauge
clutch is stock but you have to let go a lot for it to grab.
the engine and tranny seems to be in good condition but no history on the timing belt and water pump

i offered them 18 and they wouldn’t negotiate
They are firm at 20 so I walked away

I don’t know if I would buy at 19 but it just seems like a lot of work for me just to get the car driving in CA. Exhaust definitely needs to go due to the new laws about loud exhausts.

i can buy the car right now but I’m just sitting on it for now.
Will keep you guys update.
