Almost got my Evo today!
Hi Guy's,
This is my first post. I have been lurking for 2 days now, since taking a test drive. I was blown away, so I went to try to buy an Evo today. Looked at a new 2003 red/sunroof/wing car at Metro Mitsubishi in Phila. I was trading a 2002 RSX Type S with 19.5K miles on it.
I went in with a price in my head for the EVO at $27K, and was looking for $16.5K for my RSX. The dealer fought with me for about an hour (they started at $29K), pulled all their tricks, but I stuck to my guns and got them to $27.5K. They started at $16.5k for my trade, but immediately went to $17K which I thought was strange!
Well it was strange! We were doing the paperwork when the salesman looked at my car insurance info and said "your RSX is a 2002, not a 2003?" I said yes, and just like that, I lost the EVO! The salesman made a mistake and based the trade-in value on a 2003 RSX, not a 2002, and now they were only going to give me $16K for the trade, so I took my keys and left. I am bummed.
Sorry about the length of the post, thought you guys might find it interesting.

I am sure you told them that your trade in was an 02 from the beginning. Knowing that, they pretended to give you 17k for it and then pretended they made a mistake and thought it was an 03. But since you are so so close to getting your hands on the EVO, they thought you might just take 16k for you RSX and close the deal. I think it is great that you took your key and left. Try another dealer, maybe you have better luck.
Thanks for responding guy's. I think I will chill for a couple of days and then call them back and look for them to give up another $500.00 (either on the trade or off the price of the car.

I say keep looking.... you can find a better deal on an Evo.... I bought mine for $26k..... you just have to know how to stick at it. Don't seem interested and keep saying lower. They will think you are crazy, but trust me, if they really want the sale, they will give you a really good price.... You may have to go to a few dealers before you get a good price too.

I think they were trying to play you. They were hoping you wouldn't mind paying an addtl $1500 when you were <<that>> close to getting the Evo.
Have they called you back yet? If they are worth their salt, they always try one last time to make the sale.

I bet that they will call you back, especially when they are slow and looking for a deal... or call them back in a few days to see if they will deal. You can try another dealer and work from the numbers they offered you. Good luck.

Thanks for everybody's input! They have not called me back as of yet. The more I think about it, I think they were trying to play me. I hope all Mitsu dealers aren't this bad! I got used to great service at the Acura dealer. I am going to look at a black EVO tomorrow at Cherry Hill Mitsubishi in NJ tomorrow. Like fimotorsports said, I now have some nubers to work with.
DaveDave...What year was your RSX? Did you modify it at all? What do you think of the "supposed" rough ride and high noise levels of the EVO? Compared to the RSX, I did not find the EVO much harsher riding or noisier, but this was just over two brief test drives.

I had a type S and thought that car was much easier to drive.
You have to admit the Honda shifters and engine are super smooth. My only gripes were the lack of torque, small stock wheels, and overly high stock ground clearance. Too bad Honda keeps the type R's for themselves.
The noise level is definitely higher on the EVO especially when the tires wear down a bit. You need to drive it on the highway and you will see. Ride is big time harsher than the RSX due to the tires and its handling capability (GO CART). Its stiff but in a good way unlike the RSX which had the rear end hop over every bump in the road.
