Evo 5 top end rattle

Hey needing some advice on what’s the problem in my evo 5, just came off a fresh rebuild done about 3000ks. When driving last night I went over a pothole while turning at low speeds and bottomed out abit, instantly felt like I had lost boost so I pulled over to see if I had popped a cooler pipe but that didn’t turn out to be the case. I then went to drive because I couldn’t find the issue but when I started to put pressure down I could hear this sort of crunching/clattering every few seconds. It doesn’t happen on idle only when under pressure and only every 5 seconds or so. Can anyone suggest anything? Hoping it’s not major, the sounds definitely sounds like it’s coming from the top of the head and not any lower but I’m not sure

Hello / Welcome @Toofasttoo5

Pretty tough for us to figure out over the forum but, i would do the following:
  • Pull the front wheels off & give the suspension system a good inspection
  • Do you have a boost gauge on board & if so was that reading OK?
  • When you free rev the motor w/no load, is that top end sound still there?
Cheers, Joe

Yup have boost, water temp, oil pressure and all were reading fine however I didn’t try to make too much boost as didn’t want to make anything worse but I did feel like I wasn’t initially making as much boost as i usually do as it wasn’t really coming on. Yup no sound at all at idle and there’s no in consistent drops you’d think you’d have if it was bottom end damage. The sound only ever comes when the motors under pressure and it comes at about 4krpm every 5 seconds or so

And yes when I rev the motor from idle the noise is there every few odd seconds just for a short time, it’s not a consistent knocking

Well, you did note this is a recent build but just sounds odd that the suspension jolt caused an internal engine issue.

Maybe a motor mount is loose?

That’s exactly why I’m so confused because the sound started right after i bottomed out but have no clue how it could be and internal issue like it is. I’m really confused as to what it could be
