To gurney or not to gurney

I’m on the fence about picking up a rexpeed gurney flap for my 05 elec blue. Was thinking about the color matching version. Just curious what folks think about it…good looking or not so good?

Gurney flaps

Supposed to add down force. If you are a track guy why not. It’s not a mod that will break the bank.

Ouch, I thought I read somewhere that the Evo 9's have hollow spoilers where the 8's have foam inside them. Maybe that matters in this case? I had mine replaced via warranty many moons ago so I wouldn't be surprised if mine is hollow.

I'm not going to track my car so it really is just a question of if people think it looks good or not? Just curious what people think from a looks perspective.

it does 8 wings are stronger. my wing has broken driving on the highway in huge headwinds, not sure if it was a freak accident. if you're doing it for looks, i would pass.

Yep, your wing should be the hollow vs the foamed 8 wing. But for street use, you will never have that issue of overload

Heres was my damage (it snapped so hard, it dented my sweet black trunk as well)

Wow, looks like someone sat on it. That’s some serious downforce.

I had heard a few stories of guys breaking their 9 wings under air load but i really didnt believe it until it happened to me at Fontana. It was a gusty day & Fontana has high top speeds

I now have a true track day wing (APR)

Use one of these and put the gurney on the trunk.

I have one on my 9, came from the factory with the zero lift kit. No issues other than paint falling off. Its much smaller than the one Minus had.

Quite a few folks have had the 9 wing fold up under aero load. You could install a brace under it in the middle to fix permanently, But it wouldnt look stock. you might disassemble the wing and inject expandable foam into it but tricky for full fill.

If you are after the looks as primary and secondary some effect for the aeros, i'd get an 8 wing and add the gurney to it. Save the 9 wing for when you sell your car.

BTW i made my gurney from aluminum angle for my 8 MR wing on my 8 MR and used 3M tape extreme to hold , bent it to fit the slight rear radius of the wing. 3/4 in wide and 1/2 inch tall. No issues up to 130 mph. Tested by pulling as hard as possible to try to budge it. stayed put except when prying very hard with screw driver under it and that took quite a bit of prying

YMMV

The problem I have is I don’t know if they replaced mine with an 8 or 9. When the CF started showing some spots in 2009 I had it replaced under warranty. When I tap it, it sounds hallow but I have nothing to compare it to.

A true 8 wing has carbon fiber inserts on the pillars. No way they replaced the wing w/an 8

Yes, add the G-flap if you like. its not going to do anything you will notice & we understand its just a looks thing for ya, so no problem adding that at all

Your thread brought up memories for some of us.

8 wings look like this:
