400WHP Evo 8 Cali Smog

I'm looking to buy an Evo 8 that's been professionally tuned and modded by a famous evo tuner shop in WA. The problem is, I live in Cali... the mods are as follows. "English Racing modified and tuned. New Continental ExtremeContact Sport tires put on last month. GSC S2 cams, HTA71 turbo, ID 1100cc, Walbro 255, ETS intercooler pipes, Tomei downpipe and titanium catback. Stock block, trans, and tcase." Is there any chance this passes smog if I switch out the downpipe and exhaust? or would the large injectors and pump screw me?

Hey welcome & congrats on the EvO purchase. Youre in!!! @IOwnASubaru

The biggest issue is likely the tune as the test will certainly flag the ECU modifications. Stock CAT is a must. The HTA or the injectors will likely not be flagged by your average SMOG shop (i think?). Fuel pump is OK!

Post up a pic or two so we can see what ya got. Pop the hood as well!

Cheers, Joe

Haha thanks! well the thing is it's not mine yet... I'm looking into what would need to be done to register it in California (smog). My dad lives in Florida though so that might be easier if I put both names in the title? Anyways I just don't know if it makes sense to try and smog it in Cali. Thanks for the help

Also looking forward to an Evo, as a previous STI owner of the same year it was great but almost every ad you click for a subie has a blown or rebuilt motor... @MinusPrevious

Getting it smogged in California would not be fun. At all. And pricey. Not worth it, IMO. Either get a cali car or register elsewhere as mentioned above. Keep in mind that if CHP sees a registration in one state and your license in CA, they can impound the car. If registering out of state, best to have it in someone else's name.

What does it mean to impound it exactly? Like for a few days/fees like with street racers, or indefinitely?

I didn't want it impounded for any days, so never really looked into it It's CHP so I would expect the worst LOL.

you will 100% not pass smog legally without a stock tune(alongside the more obvious stuff like having a cat, oem downpipe/headers etc). Lightly modded folk will switch to a stock tune before smog and then switch back to their custom tune right after. Thecams and injectors are prob what would be holding you back from running a stock tune.

Cams should be fine, the injectors are an obvious no-go.
