In the process of doing a timing belt job spread over a couple days, piqued my interest to check out the forum and was reading this thread yesterday, which gave me a sense of dread.

Well today I got to the step of removing the accessory belt tensioner and what do you know but the damn 14mm bolt that has to be removed for that unthreaded normally for a few turns then seized up and became difficult to unscrew further and finally broke. I had a private mechanic do the prior timing belt job and I'm chalking it up to he over torqued it and trashed the threads. There shouldn't have been another time in the car's life that bolt was touched (I'm the original owner).

Would've been bad enough to just have to buy a new oil filter bracket (part 1230A018), which that bolt apparently threads into, and replace that, but as this thread portended, that part turned out to be discontinued and mostly or all out of stock. I haven't given up trying to turn one up but it's looking difficult.

will try that. Was gonna get a new one from Rossport but the 380 euro for shipping stopped me in my track !
A couple of years ago I bought 2 front wings for my Atom 3S from the UK in big huge boxes and shipping was $220-250, 180 Euros if I remember it correctly. I thought that was pretty cheap and they got here in about one wk.

I’ve had this car for 19yrs, bought it right here in this forum. Over the ensuing 2-3 yrs I had Buschur install his 2.3 L and stage 3 heads, shep racing did the tranny and Quaife LSD and AMS turbo kit.
Had lots of good memories with this car, so hoping to keep her going for many more years to come.

The serp belt tensioner assembly bolts thread into the oil pump, through the oil filter housing. Can you still remove the tensioner assembly and get access to the oil filter housing?

I wrote a more thorough explanation and a pic in a thread in the motor forum.

Summarizing that, I got the auto-tensioner off but that bolts into the oil filter bracket (I haven't gotten it off yet, assuming it doesn't go through that and screw into what's behind that). That bolt is now broken off into the oil filter bracket and I'd like to just buy a new oil filter bracket and not have to deal with extracting the broken bolt but it's becoming more clear that part isn't obtainable.

I'll suppose I can scrape by with removing that part and either being able to extract it successfully myself or get the help of a machine shop, but I'm not taking it for granted. Commencing to deal with that today.

As for this thread, the situation settling in makes me wonder what to expect for parts like this that aren't normally replaced. Hopefully places like Gates have the motivation to produce a substitute part when Mitsubishi has stopped production (part in question supposed to have been out of production for about a year now, so that at least doesn't come fast).

As people mentioned here, the advances in 3D printing are cause for optimism but on the short term horizon this makes me reflect on how vulnerable a car with numerous small, unavailable, but necessary parts is.

Ah, sh*t. Now I think I'm parsing what you're saying to be exactly what I was afraid of. So yes, I got the auto-tensioner off but now I'm afraid the broken bolt is holding the oil filter bracket onto the oil pump case.

In your case did you have to deal with the bolt extraction on the car?

This thread is making me sad... I recently had a revitalized interest in my evo, and was planning on keeping it for many more years...

My original radiator went, so I bought a Mishimoto radiator for some extra bling, but now I'm thinking I should just return it and install a cheap CSF radiator instead..

If you're talking about getting a $100 radiator with plastic tanks instead of a $300 all aluminum radiator, I'd keep the latter. My stock radiator also failed not long ago and I got a similar all-aluminum radiator. An extra $200 for a radiator without the inherent weak point of a gasketed seal between the aluminum and plastic tanks I'd suggest isn't lavish.

My radiator was just 75k mi and kinda fugly so I just replaced it with the CSF OE. I hate kiddie welded aluminum parts. I have done track events with the CSF OE with a higher pressure cap and its holding up fine.

That's fair but some of us prefer a better working radiator and don't mind if it means taking a bit of extra care. My cooling system doesn't see above 7psi so should be safe for a long time. I did buy an extra OEM radiator just in case!
