Evo 9 Coil on plug system

Hi Everyone,
I just picked up an Evo 9 last month. It is fairly stock but has some small modifications. One thing that I was hoping to put back was the black coil cover that goes on the valve cover. I am assuming the previous owner took it off because it will not properly fit with the current coils. I had a few questions I was hoping to get some help with!
Is this a common mod? I thought the Evos already came with a factory coil on plug system?
I was hoping to install factory coils but the factory coil I bought is 3-pin and these are 4-pin. Does anyone know how the factory coils attach? All I can see are 2 3-pin connectors that attach to a harness. The harness takes the 2 3-pin connectors and creates 4 4-pin connectors.

Thank you

Thanks for the reply. Which ones do you have? Are the OE coils commonly replaced?

The original coils are 3-pin (assuming I bought the correct ones). All of my harnesses are 4-pin. I am justing trying figure out what happened here.. Was there a factory harness that was removed and replaced with a 4-pin aftermarket?

On my Evo 8, there were only two ignition coils. So, one coil/connector would power two spark plugs and the other coil/connector would power the other two. Those two connectors would connect to the ignition coils and another cable would go to the 2nd spark plug.

Ok thank you that helps a lot! So there is really only 2 coils, and then 2 wires. I guess that's makes a little more sense now on why the previous owner installed the 4 denso coils.

The stock ignition system is a waste spark system. There are 2 coils on plugs (one on cyl 2 and one on cyl 4) and the other 2 with spark plug wires. The stock system is generally fine to 5-600hp but many guys will upgrade to a coil on plug kit which has 4 coils like what is currently on your car.

The two most common coils used are Denso (Toyota) coils and Nissan R35 coils. There are 2 types of Denso coils, they are exactly the same with the exception of the angle of the electrical connector. 1 version has an angled up connector (what you have pictured) and the other version has a flat connector. The flat connector wouldn't be as high as the angled version but I don't know if it will fit under the stock ignition cover.

The flat style Denso coils fit under the stock cover, that's how I have mine setup.
I sourced my coils off a Toyota echo at the scrapyard, but if you want to hop on rockauto or the like its like the 2005 ish Toyota echo. They will be bolt in plug and play replacements for the coils you currently have.

As for the harness question, you could remove the harness going to the 4 individual coils and reconnect the stock style if you wanted.

All JDC Ignition Systems with Denso coils will fit under the factory cover. We use one type of coil that has a straight connector, so they all fit under the cover. You can see the different kits directly on our site here: https://jdcustomsusa.com/collections...nition-systems
