Help to a newbie ! My Evo loses power after a while
Hi everyone im new in this forum ! I am 24 years old from Chile south america and I had the beautiful but painful idea of buying the car of my dreams, a 2001 Evo 7.
The thing is that, I had the car for approximately 2 months where it was very good and did not have any problems, but now and without any modification, when driving and after 7-10 minutes (this time is random, sometimes it passes quickly, Sometimes it happens after a long time and even in some moments it just doesn't happen) it starts to lose power at idle. The revolutions drop almost to zero and then suddenly rise to 1000rpm, however the car does not turn off, it simply keeps going down to 0 and suddenly rising as I mentioned previously.
I found this link https://www.evolutionm.net/forums/ev...andomly-3.html
(I don't know if the link is added correctly)
which describes precisely the problem I'm going through and he solved it by changing something called a map sensor.
I honestly don't understand much about this world but I'm slowly getting into it and learning as time goes by with the car. But does anyone have any recommendations on where to start from or what to do to solve this problem? Any advice is welcome.
So far I have only taken it to a mechanic who has the same car, he told me that the same thing happened to his at one point and I just had to clean the contact of the "flow meter" I don't know if it is the correct translation for what I mean. I am indicating, but it is a black box that should be the ecu? but I'm not entirely sure, I'm sorry for the ignorance and I'll resolve any comments or questions
I hope someone can help me as a guide. I'm just a lonely man with the car of his dreams and a lot of sadness because he can't drive it.
THANKS TO EVERYONE !

Your guy is referring to your Mass Air Flow meter needing cleaned and that would be the cheapest place to start, plenty of info on how, product should be easy to find.
After that you have read about the Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor, again plenty of info on how to swap and they are very very easy to do.
Good luck and have fun! Up to you to figure out what parts are on your car.

Another thing that can cause issues like this is the idle air control valve (IAC). There is a simple way to check that is working by simply removing it and watching it move when you move the key to the on position without starting the car.
I would probably clean the MAF, check the IAC and if all else fails try to log the MAP or replace it.
