Vr-1 Racing oil

How many of you guys using Vr-1 racing conventional oil? The reason why I am asking I was using vr-1 racing synthetic for year, with great results but recently I put engine together and after break in period I switched to Vr-1 racing conventional. I am changing it every 1k miles but wondering if any of you guys using conventional for a long run? My last motor look perfect inside after 40k miles with vr-1 synthetic. I never had a chance to test vr-1 conventional for a long run. Thanks!

Why run conventional? Just run the synthetic. Its better oil.

Also why 1k intervals?

Do you have real prove that synthetic is better? Vr1 conventional vs Vr1 synthetic? After talking to valvoline they said it is exactly same oil with same zinc amount, but synthetic just last longer. Every 1k miles because I am running on E85 only and car is making 920whp, so oil is good insurance if its change more often plus I can catch possible failure earlier. I am looking for someone that is running vr1 conventional in a long run as I know synthetic vr1 works good but if I am changing is every 1k miles why not run conventional vr1.

920whp means you should really be speaking with your builder, not on the forum with a million different levels of builds.

VR-1 is mid tier oil, conventional or synthetic. For that level of build I would be looking at Red Line, Motul 300v or HPL strictly to get the best of the best.
Any synthetic is superior to a similar conventional in every single measurable way you could imagine. The only benefit is cost which should not be a factor in your build, no sense in settling for less to save a few bucks.

Synthetic is better for the temps our engines see. Look at any spec, test or data. It isn't just about zinc content, its about how/when the oil breaks down.

And 1k changes on E85 is still overkill, even on conventional, but I understand wanting to stay on top of it to look for signs of failure. Do you do oil analysis every change? That's really how you'll see early signs of failure, if you are seeing it noticeable to the eye in the oil, its already too late.

I don't think 1k is overkill to be honest but everyone has different opinions. I am building 4g63 and ej25 for a living and trust me I know when the early failure is starting. In my drag evo I am changing oil every 20 passes on 1/4 mile but it is a little different application. On my street evo I was always using vr1 synthetic with great results, and my original post is asking if there is anyone here using vr1 conventional for a long. Thanks for help!

VR-1 had its time years ago when "racing oil" was hard to get and there wasn't really any other options for a thick 20w-50, VR-1 was just widely available and still relatively cheap which is why it gained a cult following. The base oil blend and additive pack is really lacking compared to newer race oil makers like the brands I mentioned.

I was about to say. Vr1 is great oil, I am using it for every build, that I put together but always was using synthetic, after break in period. I know David Burchur is recommending Brad Penn oil which is semi syntheric or vr1 oil if Brad penn is not available. I will continue using vr1 oil and most likely switch to synthetic. I was hoping to find someone here that is using vr1 conventional for a long run, or maybe someone that disassembled engine after long run with vr1 conventional. My old street evo engine made 40k+ miles always 700+whp and on vr1 syntchetic and when I disassembled it everything looks brand new. Bearings were in great condition, cams were perfect etc,

I am currently using VR-1 synthetic but will be switching to conventional. When my car was at RRT Motorsports, I saw their delivery of bulk oil was all VR-1 conventional and when I asked the owner he said if you do your oil changes at 1/1.5k miles why bother putting in synthetic.

Exactly!! I also found out that AG autosport using only VR-1 non synthetic on all their builds. I am using non synthetic VR-1 on my 2 evo's with great results so far. I will keep it non synthetic and I am changing oil every 1k miles. Engine is clean inside and oil is clean also and oil is cheap so win win situation.

That does make a lot of sense. If you're replacing in short intervals, why go full syn.
