Some Rather imporant information.

By Apex Killer
I had a good conversation with a good friend inside of Mitsubishi this afternoon and here is what I have been told.

Those pics of the yellow EVO VII that showed up here a few months ago that were taken at a show are not pics of the EVO VII. That car was a regular Lancer that was dressed up. That is not what the car will look like.

We have all heard that the EVO comes with Brembo brakes, Recaro seats, YAW control and so on. That is not true as of yet. The Brembos just recieved DOT approval last Friday. The front mount has also been approved but that is about it as of today. All the other trick cool **** has yet to get the OK.
This is really bad news. We all just figured that the EVO would show up here with that stuff and that is not the case yet. They are working on it but the complete package will not be confirmed until the first of December.

An official release date has not been set. There is talk that the car will go on sale the first day of the LA Auto Show which is the "Tuner" style auto show. The release will be a HUGE deal. But again nothing is confirmed.

The price has also been said to be below $30,000 and that is their goal. However if it takes a lot of work and R&D to get the car to pass DOT the price could raise.

There have been a number of HP figures floating around too. Everything from 250 to 280 has been reported. 275 is thier goal, but the engine mapping is not complete yet so there is no confirmed figure.

Seems like some significant information, I'm just hoping it's not a repeat of something we already know.

If it's accurate it tells us a little more. Of course it wasn't the Evo VII at the Vegas meeting...the VII has been out a while..it was the Evo VIII
The part about the LA show is accurate. The Evo will make its world debut at the show. The hp figure sounds about right for the first released Evo..there may be a higher hp one later in the year 300+hp. One other thing that has been going through extensive testing and will likely make it to the VIII is the 6-speed. Also, I'm sure at the very least the Recaro "semi buckets" (the ones optional on the GTA) will be able to make it. So we're looking at: 275hp, 6-speed, fmic, Brembos, Recaros, around 30k, released/shipped at end of Jan. ...sound good? BTW, I'm saying this is the way it is likely to be...nothing is for sure

Sounds believable.

Note to Mitsubishi (we know you're reading ):

If you have to raise the price a bit above $30,000 in order to keep all the goodies from the Japanese model, then PLEASE DO! I'm referring to:

Recaros
Brembo brakes
Intercooler sprayer
ACD
AYC
Newly developed electronic front diff
6 speed
Aluminum suspension pieces

But one thing I wouldn't mind that Japanese model doesn't have, is some undercoating please!

Thanks for listening...

the source seems to be true, but im not getting all worried over nothing like most people seem to do in the EVO Rumors section. Im just going to wait until OFFICIAL spec are released and then go from there. but seems like is on the right path to having a good EVO version.

I highly doubt that was a REGULAR lancer dressed up. The pics at Vegas clearly show an INTERCOOLER and 1-2 people here got to see it upclose and personal. Unless it's a fake intercooler, which I highly doubt.

I'm going to bet the Vegas EVO was the prototype-production model. I don't forsee a problem which Recaros and such in the car. Maybe no ACD/AYC at under 30K, but I'll just have to pay for those options then!

So I believe it is going to look much like that car we saw in Vegas. Remember the car is already undergoing hot weather testing, the spy photo was taken, heavily disguised. Why would they be testing a car with parts not approved? I think Mitsubishi has a reason they are holding back information, and no media sources (read: magazines, newspapers) know ANYTHING but whatever they can gather from past quotes made at the auto show in 2002, or statements made by important people.

DOT Approval

I see it as odd that Brembo brakes need model specific approval, since they are being sold as standard on some U.S. models (new Viper) already.
Regarding the styling, it's quite likely that the model shown at he Las Vegas meeting was a test mule. The AYC and ACD does of course remain the big question.
Here's a link to a Detroit News special. Scroll to the bottom, there's some interesting info regarding future Lancer releases...

I agree completely!!! Though I'd one more thing:
Don't comprimise horse power!! Give us the 275+ hp!

Whatever they do to keep the HP around 250 could easily be changed. With simple mods I'm sure you could get it back to j-spec hpwise.

Maybe, maybe not. If they use smaller turbos or scratch the intercooer it will be very tough/expensive to match hp incrrease.

it wasn't the lancer dressed up... it was the evo 7 with the evo 8's new body components.
that's why there was an IC etc.

Getting 20 hp from stock out of a turbod car should be as simple as a few bolt on changes. I think HP would be the least of my concerns if I could afford the VIII. I think it's the easiest thing to gain/recover on just abou any car. Losing things like ACD/AYC on the other hand...Much harder to make up for if that's what you're looking for.

also a lower hp number will help keep insurance down on this, thus maker it easer to afford.

If I was worried about insurance I'd buy a Taurus wagon.
