Evo range

I've heard rumor that a Japan-Spec evo only got like 130 miles for each full tank, while A WRX STi got like almost 300 miles. Is this true guys?

With a 10.5 gal tank and approx 19MPG highway (who actually drives at 65MPH?)you can get 199.5 miles to the tank theroreticaly. However most of my driving wil be lots of accelleration city type miles and almost no highway miles at anything less then 80MPH. So Im expecting more like 10-15 MPG or 100-150 miles per tank.

P. S. My maxima has a theoretical range of 536.5, (29MPG highway/ 18.5 Gal tank ), miles per tank but I rearly see over 350.

Guack007, do you think the fact that Evo VII is 5 speed and Subaru STi is 6 speed contribute to the difference in gas mileage?

The 6-speed can make a difference depending on gearing. I think the 6-speed for the Evo VIII will help gas mileage some. If you think about it, 19mpg for a 4 cyl. car is pretty bad. That is worse or similar to what a 400hp supercharged '03 Cobra gets.

Guack007,

that website made a bad conversion. 48l = 12.68 US gallons, and not 10.5. So it ain't that bad.

The published data for the STi in JDM spec gives a combined gas mileage avg. of 10.4km/litre, or 26mpg. The Lancer Evo 7 had a combined avg. of 8.5km/litre, I believe, or about 21.25mpg. That's for the manual - the automatic GT-A was shockingly bad on mileage. Probably another reason people didn't like it...

Cheers,

Paul Hansen

This is a case of everyone is right and everyone is wrong.

48 Liters = 10.5 Imperial Gallons = 12.6 US gallons

Contrary to urban myth the latest Evo gets better mileage than the UK STi. See below all data from the respective UK importers.

Fuel consumption Evo VII RS-II (chassis code JMYSNCT9A)
http://www.mitsubishi-cars.co.uk/evo...ifications.asp

Urban mode =18.7 mpg (UK) = 15.6 MPG (US remember convert to US Gallons)
Extra urban mode =33.6 mpg (UK) = 28.0 MPG (US)
Combined mode=26.2 mpg (UK) = 21.8 MPG (US)
CO2 emissions 258 g/km

Fuel consumption UK STi
http://www.subaru.co.uk/index2.htm

Urban mode =16.9 mpg (UK) = 14.1 MPG (US)
Extra urban mode =29.7 mpg (UK) = 24.7 MPG (US)
Combined mode=23.3 mpg (UK) = 19.4 MPG (US)
CO 2 emissions 290 g/km

For reference:
Sti Overall gearing
1st 3.636
2nd 2.375
3rd 1.761
4th 1.346
5th 0.971
6th 0.756
final reduction gear ratio 3.900
Sti Overall gearing (6th) 0.756 x (final) 3.9 = 2.9484 (overall)

Evo VII Overall gearing
1st 2.785
2nd 1.95
3rd 1.407
4th 1.031
5th 0.72
final reduction gear ratio : 4.529
Evo VII Overall gearing (5th) 0.72 x (final) 4.529 = 3.26088 (overall

Lightbulb WoW

Well put erikgj, That about sums it up then doesn't it? Except for one factor which is wind resistance. With the new body style of the new STI (whatever it may come out as) and the EVO 8 the coefficient of drag will probably be a little lower allowing for beter milage for both cars.

In the end I guess we'll just have to wait and wait and wait and see.

My EVO VIII is going to be my daily driver and weekend warrior. I can only afford to own one car. Gas mileage does matter to me though, otherwise I'd be buying a 2003 SVT Cobra (well, I'd have to have a few other things wrong with me to want to actually buy a FORD). Anyway, I drive about 250 miles a week (to and from work and business/leisure). I've also taken a few trips to Canada (500 miles each way) because my girlfriend lives there, so I would be also driving this car to Canada at least 3 times a year. My 1997 Saturn SC2 has racked up 150,000 miles (mostly highway) as of today. But it's an automatic. I have some engine problems, so I get about 260 miles per tank of gas, which puts me at around $130 a month for gas excluding Canada trips.

Hopefully the 6-speed will save me on the gas mileage for long trips to Canada. I'd like to hear other's opinions on this, and if you would do what I am doing (getting an EVO). I've considered a Celica GTS 6-speed for the sake of gas mileage, but I'd hate to drive around looking like a Ferrari (ie. target for police, vandals, theives, racers.)

Mike

My opinion: Not exactly a good daily driver for long distances. Bad gas mileage, harsh suspension, stiff seats, etc.
BTW, if I didn't want a car with 4drs and awd an '03 Cobra would be in my driveway.

Question

Hey broeil,

How much actual experience do you have with the car, have you ever owened or used one for more then a few weeks?
Since I haven't Id like to know from someone who has just how annoying filling gas up that often is and just how uncomfortable can the ride get after say 1 hour 5 hours etc.

Maybe claudius can answer this one too cause he owns a 6.5, although it may be a harsher ride then the 7.

Personally the ride doesn't bother me. But I'm used to driving cars with stiff suspension work. It may bother someone that isn't used to that type of ride though. The US Evo may not be quite as harsh either..it might be along the lines of the slightly softer GTA suspension.
As far as gas mileage...it can get annoying looking down and seeing you need to stop and get gas again when you feel like you just got gas I own several cars that are that way.
BTW, I don't own an Evo but I've driven one.

Well on the positive side, your trip to the gas station will be another excuse to go drive your Evo.
