Mitsubishi hid 25 car defects
From correspondents in Tokyo
June 2, 2004
JAPAN'S Mitsubishi Motors hid 25 defects in its cars from regulators - in addition to five problems it publicised in 2000 - to avoid issuing recalls for the vehicles, local news agencies reported today.
The car maker acknowledged in 2000 that it had systematically covered up auto defects for more than two decades and issued massive recalls for the vehicles affected.
But Mitsubishi Motors only made public and issued recalls for five of the defects in 2000 even though it had about discovered 30 of them, Kyodo News Agency reported.
The automaker contacted the Transportation Ministry on Wednesday about its failure to fully disclose the vehicle problems, Kyodo reported citing unidentified ministry officials.
Mitsubishi Motors officials could not immediately be reached for comment. The company issued a statement saying its president would hold shortly hold a news conference later on its "handling of recalls in the past."
The company's image has been seriously battered by the recalls and the cover up that came to light in 2000.
Burdened with more than 1 trillion yen (US$9 billion) in debt, plunging car sales and the recalls, Mitsubishi reported a much steeper than expected loss of 215 billion yen (US$1.9 billion) for the fiscal year ended March 31.
It also suffered when US-German automaker DaimlerChrysler abruptly announced in April that it would not provide it with a fresh cash infusion.
Under a revival plan its chief executive described as its "last chance," Mitsubishi last month it said it would cut 22 percent of its global work force, close an assembly plant in Japan and receive a $4 billion infusion from the Mitsubishi group and other investors.

well this is a step in the right direction for :Mitsu:
taking care of problems from a few years ago will start the process of getting above water for this company. without tending to those matters, they will simply continue to fail.
let us all remember that VW was about to pull out of the NA market due to its problems, and lack of sales. They now own multiple manufacturers from Lambo and Bugatti to Seat and Audi. Now their sales are dropping like crazy on the MK4 line due to increasing recalls.
this happens to every manufacturer whether you hear it or not, but mitsu will just have to suck it up and realize their mistakes before they can forge ahead.

I frankly would be happier if Mitsubishi stop making the EVolution at this point.
Then the resell value for my car will sky rocket!!
Bad for AWD turbocharged affordable supercar market tho... (AKA STI vs EVO)
However, I don't think they got the ***** to end the new era of hotrod war between EVO and STI. It's just too good.
But this happens. Camero got killed (which is far better car than Mustang), mustang lived on.
Shelby Cobra died but Ferrari lived on and so on...

In my country Mitsu is a **** regarding client assistance. The car is good (minus the clutch) but I'm considering to forget Mitsu as a car company. Just a few improvements on the car plus a good client respect and Mitsu could multiple by two the market share, but I don't see much effort to change Mitsu image... as an Evo owner told me Mitsu is a large company and motor corporation is not so important for them
mitsu makes turbos and motors for different car companies as well as cellphone parts and various other electronic parts and TV!
We bought the mitsu TV like 15 years ago and it still works fantastic!

yeah my family has had a mitsubishi tv for at least 15 years i would say and it still works perfectly. All the other tv's that we have had have either died or needed to be repaired constantly. Oh well, I hope Mitsu can get it together... I think that they need to pay more attention to their dealer network because some people have a wonderful experience and then other people's experiences turn into nightmares. They just need to make sure all of their dealers are good quality and the people running them are fair to the customers.
