i need an opinion -

Hey all out there , i need a second , third or 4th opinion on my situation. heres the

deal . i bought my 03' evo used with 7800 miles( i thought what could be wrong at

such a low mileage) on it a couple of weeks ago. last weekend was the first time i

got it on to the freeway and i noticed that changing into

5th gear above 60 miles an hour it would consistantly grind going into gear. so i took

it into the dealer and they found metal shavings (brass) in the transmission fluid.

they then said they have to disassemble the transmision to determine the damage

and if it has been abused. fortunately even if it was ' abused ' i told them that was

not my problem but theirs- they agreed (30 days warranty from the dealer). my

questions are these. how much damage could there be if it shifts fine in all the

other gears ?

should i insist on a new transmission and clutch ? should i just get a new evo ? or

should i quit whinning and let them fix whatever is wrong and be happy? thx to
all

How much roll over warranty is there on the '03 models? Only the orginal owner of '04s get 10/100k. Subsequent owners get something liike 5/50k. Since you probably have less warranty that the previous owner, i would push to get things replaced as soon as possible.

I believe a new clutch should be requisite for any used evo. You never really know how hard the previous owner was on the car. For any of you out there thinking about buying a used evo: make them install a new clutch BEFORE you take delivery. I mean how careful would _you_ be if you knew you were selling the car?

All that aside, isn't the 5th gear grind a known problem with the '03 model.
There was even I recall...i thought. Maybe just a TSB.

the brass shavings are your syncros. They made to shave and grind inorder to preserve your gears. So if the problem just started and not for long, id say your gears should be fine.

well hopefully they will fix it completely because it sounds like the person who had it before probably beat the hell out of it.

any info on EVO7 GTA?

I just bought an EVO7 GTA. Does anyone have info on this? I was really intrigued, was originally looking for a good fresh one ranging from evo5 to evo7. I saw this and fell in love with it.

GTA is only 2000 models made (from what I know). It's got a five speed close ratio tiptronic transmission. Very interesting but it takes some getting used to.

If any one has info on this, fantastic or not, please tell me.

I am only able to duplicate that problem when shifting from fourth to fifth at high rpm and speeds....say 110ish or so. Would it do it at all speeds on your car or at high rpms also. Maybe I need to change my tranny fluids also.

if your mechanic said there was alot of brass flakes in the fluid when they drained it, you should really get ur syncros checked out. cause thouse would be the source of the flakes. The syncro mesh only helps the process and eases the changing of gears. But you must understand that the damage has been done on the syncros. And if they are worn, you need em changed.

you dont have to push it anymore then you do now... the 'issue' starts when u report the problem, not when u fix it.... your under warranty no problem.
