Automobile Mag July 2004 03 Evo 12 Month Report
Automobile gives a good thumbs up to the 03 Evo in their 12 month report. Only complaint was no cruise control... ahem.. Mitsu? They also paid $1257 to replace their clutch after many track sessions.
They also publiush that in 12 months 5700 Evos were sold.
But their mph in gears diagram has me baffled:
Mag -> Should be?
1st 38 -> 40
2nd 58 -> 60
3rd 80 -> 83
4th 109 -> 113
5th 150 -> 162
Thats at 7000 rpm, and many run to 7500 rpm or so.

I firmly believe that there is something wrong with the Evo's synchros quality and they ought to do a recall and replace them with better quality ones. I don't know of how many other people has failed but locally, out of 5 evo owners I know, 2 people have replaced their 3rd and 5th gear synchro under warranty. My 2nd gear synchro is about to go and... the Automobile test vehicle had a synchro went bad too.
I know some of you will defend Mitsubishi and say... it's probably driver abuse or people don't know how to drive... blah!!! I know none of the local evo cars were bad due to abuse.
I'd love to see how many Mitsubishi has replaced under warranty.

Oh well, I noticed that the gear stats seemed to be a little off. Those numbers are supposed to be the MAX in every gear, aren't they?? Anyways, it is a pretty good article, one guy complains because he couldn't fit his snowboard in the back. I also thought it was interesting that they openly admitted that they drove it really hard and that their clutch still lasted 20,000 miles. They said that if you don't drive it like they did, you could easily get more out of the clutch, brakes, and tires.

Those may be actual speeds recorded in each gear. Slightly worn tires will decrease the outer diameter enough to make 1-2 mph difference in the speed recording at redline.
I have 30,000 Mile son my Evo, No Problems @ all. Tranny is great, stock clucth has PLENTY of meat on it, 340WHP too. nly problem I GUESS i have is I get a slight, intermitant rattle in teh front passenger door, all I have to do is tighten the panel, I am too Lazy to do so.

.. btw, you're supposed to stay in your seat when shifting ... shifting under your car can be dangerous to your health
I was clowning around the other day seeing where all I could, shift from. high rpm, low rpm, from 1st to 5th, reverse to neutral, with my left hand, left foot, under the car, in the engine bay, from the trunk. It was dopeness tight BOYEEEEEE!
