EVO sounds like **** with A/C on?
Energy can not be created or destroyed... hence it takes energy to drive the AC unit.. which in turns removes HEAT from the air. This removed heat... cools the air... which feels good to you. The engine has to work to do this (via pulleys to the AC pump). While the AC is off.. the pulley still turns.. but the 'load' is minimal and does not take much energy from the crank. When on.. the load is high and the crank must now drive this pump and the wheels... resulting in a loss of power to wheels.

. With the 95º+ weather and A/C on it feels like im down 50 hp
. And yes my car sounds like its ready to blow up when the A/C is on.
My Evo sound just fine with the ac on or off. From what I read from the beginning of this thread, it seems like this "noise" happened the first time you used the ac. Well, if you read the manual and as a mechanic, you should turn on your ac at least 5-10 min. once a week to circulate the lubricant/refrigerant in the system. Otherwise the mechanical parts (bushings/bearings) inside the compressor will dry up. So by not using it for a long time then all of a sudden you use it, the compressor will start dry and that's where the noises will begin. For you guys who wants to do the once a week cycle, and worried about the hp, here is what I do. When you are on the freeway/highway and hitting the offramp, turn on the ac. Since you are decelerating the ac will slow the motor down and put less stress on the brake (not alot though, but a little). Then when you accelerate, just push the ac button off and there's no load on the motor. Like I said my ac is working fine with no noise.

That takes power also from the motor.

How can you fix the compressor being dry? I think I'll turn the A/C on from now on when the turbo timer is doing it's thing during the cool down process.. but will this in time help?
Good info man thx!

From: its not where you at, its where you from!
I noticed an annoying rattling sound when the clutch is disengaged and the car is idling (with the A/C on). I try not to use the A/C when I am city driving. I usually use it only on the freeway and I don't ever use max A/C...As for the power loss...wow!! People didn't know that using the A/C will reduce your power? That's scary...I will not even comment on that one!!
What's funny is, I was running the A/C one day while driving through Tempe, AZ, on the way to a D-Backs game and this jacka$$ in an STi rolled up next to me, and thene dropped a gear and ripped past me..."Hello MORON!! I have the A/C on, what am I gonna do, turn it off, then catch up!" My girlfriend said that he ruined the rep of all STi owners' with that riceboy tactic!

for all the disbelievers who doesnt think they lose power with A/C on...try going to the tracks and run the car with the A/C on and without....see how much time you lose...then you will be a believer
Along with power loss, I noticed the clutch engagement sucks and the shifts are more jerky. You have to slip the clutch more to get going.
I live in the desert where it's over 100 every day in the summer and refuse to put the A/C on just because of the crappy shifting and rough idle. It sucks to pay 30K and not have a smooth running car with A/C on. Who cares, I use my other car most times and no A/C issues, runs beautiful. Ahh, the price you pay for performance.
