Depends on what you mean by 'wrong oil'....if you mean you put thick gear oil in there instead of Mobil1 10w30, it would be bad. If you put in some non synthetic oil for a few miles, you will be fine. If you put in the wrong weight oil, you are probably ok as long as it is not excessively hot or cold outside.

As hot and humid as it is here in Texas during the summer, and as hard as I drive the car, I filled it with 15W50 this go round. In the winter I will drop back down to 10W30.

For warranty reasons you might not want to go bragging about it after you get it fixed. Although...I'm tempted to call the service manager at my dealer and ask:

"Can you help me with a problem? I've found the synthetic oil to be a little expensive, so I tried olive oil..."

did your oil light come on?
did the car make 'outrageous sounds' IMMEDIATELY, like before you even left the dealership?

very likely there was no oil in it at all. it happens... usually at quick-lube chains though.

Someone at the office took his car (Toyota Corolla) in for an oil change, and 30 miles down the road the engine siezed.

They forgot to put oil back in. Silly dealer. Took 3 months of arbitration and hassle, and dealing with two botched short block jobs. Toyota of NA ended up giving him a brand new Corolla, top trim, fully loaded.

If I were you, check everything (get someone knowledgeable about cars if necessary), document it to death, and be prepared to fight it tooth and nail.

at most you should be using 10w40. what you've got is way to thick for oil galleries intended to be used with 30 weight oil... not smart.

the high temp protections offered by full synthetic 10w30 or even 10w40 is *plenty*. you're flat out using the wrong oil!

If you're talking to me, heavier oil will not make valvetrain noise, lighter oil will. Also, my mileage is improving every tank. Thanks for asking! I am comfortable in what I do with my vehicles considering my family and I have been building and racing (including all race motors) for 10 years (me) and 35 years (them). Some dude on the Internet isn't going to change my philosophy!
