Autoweek Issue - 'Warranty Woes' | [ALL THREADS MERGED]
hmm okie let my 2 cents is this. I've read somewhere that MSM's evo is pretty much brand spanking new. He took it to one auto-x event and the evo blew up on him. Blown turbo, rods etc... I think given the technology of the 4G63, I would assume that the Evo can handle at least 1 auto-x event. Hmm and honestly, if you're too crazy and wild at any auto-x event, they throw you out, so I doubt that it was abused. I think he had a legitimate problem with the Evo, but he got slapped with a voided warranty. If i remember right, they didnt even take a look at his Evo, they pulled up his record and it blacklisted him, so he didn't even get a chance for the techs to deem if the work needed to be done is related to car abuse from racing.

You Know this makes the Dragon very mad. The car companies put out flashy ads glorifying racing and spirited driving. Slowbaru gives out SCCA memberships with one hand and promptly voids waranties with the other. Every car company now-a-days wants to make money off the import sport compact market and they advertise the like. But they two face us by not supporting us in our endeavors. I understand that modifieing a car is risky but they themselves should give us a list of Corporate approved aftermarket componet companies that we can get our stuff from. IS ANY CAR COMPANY LISTENING!!!!??? How about you MITSU? I know you frequent this site. I mean come on the aftermaket industry is explodding every year, some car company should strike a deal with these AfterMarket companies and make money by making the enthusiast happy. Stop letting the bean counters and lawyers run the show. DAMN IT MITSU!!!!! YOU NEED US EVO OWNERS!!!! WE"RE KEEPING YOUR NAME ALIVE!!!!!!!
Awesome info. Thanks for the post. I am printing a copy and putting it in my glove box (along with a CD with the EVO add from TV where they show the EVO involved in street races and yes, they show an aerial view of a red EVO on an autocross course drifting around a corner.

That is NOT how it is marketed and that is NOT why I bought it. It is marketed and sold to be BOTH a daily driver and a race inspired race capable car. If that is not the case then they should offer to buy my car back if they don't want to stand behind their product. (Plus mods
I have never had one problem with my car but IF I do I expect them to cover what THEY are responsible for. NOT for what I am responsible for.
yeah its understandable that if you race they "can" void your warranty. The keyword is "can". They put those clauses in for the specific reason that they do not want to foot your bill for racing, i.e blown clutches, tires etc... However if you have a legitimate warranty issue they need to fix it. I mean come on, they didn't even look at this car. The point I got was that, they didn't even look at his car. His file pulled up as blacklisted. So he didn't even have a chance for anything, his whole car was voided of warranty. Okie lets just say an extreme example, say his radio in the Evo konks out. He can't get it fixed under warranty cause he's blacklisted due to participation in Auto-X. Thats kinda crappy. I mean if they at least took a look at the car without him blacklisted then I dont think all of this issue would arise.
Even the Mitsu rep in the article stated "if you enter an event once in a while who's going to know????" Anyhow thats kind of funny because in the article, it states that they would only know if you go in 2-3 times to replace your clutch that you're abusing the car. So if they haven't been search website and cross referencing how the heck did they know MSM was auto-x'ing.

They're not too good at standing behind their own word...if you're going to say something, stand by it and don't send out mixed messages. Now I see why Mitsubishi couldn't keep those warranty issues covered up, they'd be terrible liars in court...they can't keep a story that they designed themselves straight. Wow.

Yeah, the car is "race capable", but by doing so, you give up your warranty.
Seems like you guys want to have your cake and eat it, too, but that's not how life works, unfortunately.
You mod or participate in a timed, competitive event, warranty is done. End of story.
Too me if the car is bone stock and u race it they should warranty the car. But here is food for thought. I was at a shop and the guy was telling how the engine is not the 4g63 that everyone thinks it is . He told me watch out driving it hard and modding the engine the connecting rods will be the first to go. They are the same used in the 2 g engines. Strange that it happened to this guy. I think car companies should offer some sort of Performance warranty or something for performance cars. Knowing that some cars are going to be pushed to the edge.

I think some are missing the point. No one wants to cheat Mitsu and get things for free that are not supposed to be be free.
Most will agree that if you go to a racing event, Mitsu is not going to sponsor you. If you break down at the event, it comes out of your pocket. That is fine too. If you put an an MBC and your blow the turbo, it will come out of your pocket - no one is stating anything different. That is the norm for any automaker.
However, if you go to an auto-x event and all is good, no problems. The car still drives fine without any issues after the event for a few weeks. Then, something happens to the car. You take it the dealer to find out what is wrong but the dealer/mitsu will not even try to find out what is worng and tells you - sorry no warranty for you because you went to an autox event. That is what people have a problem with.
They did not even look at the car to see what broke BEFORE denying warranty work. Maybe the failure was not related to any racing. If they actually took the car, determined that it was abused and it failed due to racing, then I think most people would not have a problem. But they refused to even find out what could be wrong with the car. The warranty was void before the failure even happened. What if it was a legitimate quality problem for that part? It can happen. Further, mitus own press release states that they will not back flag you for doing one auto-x. They will first determine what happened and give you the benefit of the doubt. If this was true, no one would have any issues with this. The problem is that is not what is happening.

Pay to play, simple as that.

When the warranty is restricted prior to the vehicle even being damaged, and when no diagnosis of the vehicle is done, Mitsubishi has not met its burden of the contract.
I subscribe to AutoWeek (best general car mag out there) and saw the article a couple of days ago. The thing that gets me the most is Subaru giving out free SCCA memberships and then voiding STi your warranty if you participate in an SCCA event.
That's like a beautiful girl who comes on to you on a bar. You take her up on it, and then find out later she gave you a social disease she knew she had.

It's kinda funny how people fall for the commercial of cars especially with Suburu. You see the car being driven hard and expect to do the same thing. Those commercials are staged people! Personally I never seen a commercial for the Evo. I bought the car reading about it a few years back and how Mitsu. dominated the rally world. Anyway, don't fall for the commercials. If you really want to race, get a race car. Don't fall for that line "race inspired", "rally bred" and race the car. Read between the lines; "race inspired" not a race car,"rally bred" not a rally race car.
