Intake system got louder!?

Well, I'm not really sure where to post this, but I'll give it a shot here. I hit a stinking raccoon on friday night and it pushed the intercooler screen all the way in during impact that the one water nozzle and 2 bolts that hold the screen to the lower bumper dented my intercooler. Also on the bottom side of the car (passenger) one of the lower splash shields came off. It is one of the smaller parts of the whole under body splash shield (triangular shaped) So anyway car drives the same, but it is louder. I can hear all the sounds of the turbo compressing the air etc. Is this normal? Does the lower splash shields dampen the sounds of the turbine system?

Will be taking the car to the shop tomorrow for estimate and repair. BTW... no paint scratches or chips!

Probably a boost leak, the stock intercooler is not all that strong. It is very light aluminum, you can plug it with JB weld or something like that.

man, i hit a stupid raccoon a few weeks ago and it pushed the lower left hand side screen through. Luckily, that was the extent of the damage, but it broke the little plastic pieces on the bumper that the screen attaches to, but I just ended up using some glue to put the little plastic piece back on to the bumper. What a pain in the ***.

I don't really see any visible signs of crack or hole in the intercooler but I'll take a good look tonight. I'm going to try and have the insurance pay for a new one since I told them it has some visible damage. I'm just worried they will tell me it's fine even though I know something isn't right and I sure the heck don't want to pay for a new one. Would a good hit on the intercooler cause any piping to come loose on the intercooler? I'll take some photos tonight

What are the odds. Same exact thing happened to me. Not sure if mine was a racoon or a fox but lower front spoiler damage, screen damage, intercooler damage. I am defiantly leaking boost, the turbo spools up, defiantely louder but the car doesn't get up and go...It's like I was driving a plain Lancer. It happened late last Thursday night. A short-cut using a toll-way through a rural section turned out to be a very BAD IDEA!

Here are the photos. Front spoiler damage, where a piece of my underbody splash shield came off and where the Intercooler got dented (by the water nozzle and also a dent from a bolt holding the screen to the lower spoiler.

Hey I hate to be the bad guy, but the intercooler is connected to the compressor cover....if your compressor wheel is coming into contact with your compressor housing, it will make a noise... I would have a Mitsubishi mechanic look at the problem ASAP. You never know...

Yikes .... yes it looks like the same thing that happened to me, but I think your's is a little worse. Where is your boost leak coming from? I am taking my car to the shop today and i'm going to get an estimate. I am also going to do my best to get them to replace the intercoolor.

I'm not sure where exactly I'm leaking from but if you look closely at the picture you can see the tab where the intercooler attaches on the bottom is no longer attached and is just hanging there. The intercooler got pushed back a bit on the left side and u can see the damage in the lower left hand corner. This is my plan, get the car fixed and see how it sounds/performs. When they take the broken pieces off, they are suppose to inspect for other damage, the intercooler damage is obvious on my car. If it still isn't right, take it back to the shop and get them to try and fix it (e.g., get them to get local Mitsu dealer to look at it) so the insurance company foots the bill.
