breaking the back end loose... or drifting...
grip racing is faster most of the time i agree fully... but there is situations where a nice rotation drift is needed... say like on small downhill-runs with extremely short straights till the next hairpin... you can rotate your car quicker to hit the line to the next turn, or have a counter inertia (best way i can put it) drift set to rotate lightly through that short straight into the next hairpin where a proper grip style line won't yield faster time through those turns... i agree D1 style is an art and more for show, but there are times a drift can be beneficial...
Whoever said drifting is about weight transfer is how to do it was completely right... You can make the stock evo drift if you have enough weight transferred to the front... when doing that you putting the weight on the front tires which will have the grip to guide the turn line, and take the weight off the rear which will lower the grip of the rear drastically enough that you can power it loose to rotate the car... mainly a throttle lift will be enough to get the rear lite enough... while you lift off before the turn, make a fluid but sharp turn to the outside of the turn then make another fluid turn to the inside of the turn with more of the steering wheel cranked and smoothly, but quickly, stab on the go pedal... that's the best i can describe how to do it... it's must easier to do then describe i think... hehe... well for me at least...
it's also easier to do on a downgrade, just wanted to throw that in... but, it's a lil' more dangerous if you don't land it right, the grade will make it much easier to slide completely off the road... so, be careful, and i'm no way to be held responsible for any ill outcomes of trying what i wrote...

the evo is very hard to drift, the way i do it is go in a corner really fast and chock the steering wheel, the back will come out, but my car never have enough power for the counter steer because i was going in so fast to brake the back end, i always do 180, haha
