Got another EVO, should I break it in different?
Got another EVO, should I break it in different?
Well, my wrecked EVO is still on Ebay, and I just picked up another silver EVO yesterday. I got the 04 with the sun, sound, and leather. I broke in my old EVO for the first 1000 miles with the factory synthetic oil. I was wondering if there is any vaildity to breaking in with regular oil in regard to the seals. I really didn't notice anything different or smell gas in the oil on my old EVO. I would rather not mess with how the factory has set it up unnecessarily. Please let me know if there is anything regarding this that I should know. Thanks
I immediately drained the oil and replaced with Castrol GTX 10w30. I avoided long cruises at one constant RPM.
After the 500 mile mark, more or less
, I let it rip and did not shy away from redline.

Did you really know if there was an actual benefit, or was it just to be on the safe side? I just can't conceive that Mitsu engineers would allow that to happened, especially now that they are giving the 100K miles powertrain warranty on the EVO too. As I said before, on my previous EVO I left it alone and didn't really notice a drop in power or smell gas in the oil. I should know since I did every oil change on it. And there were a lot of oil changes since I did them every 3500 miles for the 32,000 miles of life that car had for the whole year I had it.
You are going to get debates from both schools of thought.
I think Mitsu knows what it's talking about. This idea of reg oil vrs synthetic is somewhat old-school.
Machine work is better, tolerences are tighter. Some companies break in motors for you, (not Mitsu).
If you go with recomended, you can't go wrong.
otherside: Today's dino oils are almost as good as synyhetics with improvements in refinement and added chemicals.

Hey Sanjay,
Sorry about your Evo man, I'm a friend of your cousin Dilan and he showed me the pics the day after it got totaled. The unibody of the car held up great and you were lucky to get out alive! Be careful this time.
Btw, how's the new sound system and leather like?

I've had two engines in my Evo. The first I broke in like a sissy(low rpm, little boost) The car took 12 degrees timing on top end(weak)on pump gas. The second engine I would accelerate then let off still in gear to get the piston rings to seal properly. I redlined it and drove her hard like I do on a daily basis. A mechanic told me to break it in hard and she will run hard. Now my Evo takes 17-18 degrees timing on top end(powerful)on pump gas. For the break in period I used cheap non synthetic oil and then changed it to 10w-30 fully synthetic. My car runs strong. Don't be scared DOO it.
You'll love the results.

mdzuricky77, so what you are saying is to get the car, go home, change it to dino oil, drive hard to seal the rings properly, then after break in, change back to synth oil?
how many miles of hard break in with dino oil?
how many miles of hard break in with dino oil?
1500-2500 should be plenty. I have 2200 on my car now and will change the oil this week whenever I'm able. if you want to get the break-in metal bits and whatnot out, change sooner but keep the non-synthetic in beyond 1000 miles for sure.
I break my four stroke dirtbikes in the same way, but on dirtbikes, it's hours.

Thanks for the info guys, and I have seen some of the old posts regarding this since I usually cruise this site almost daily. I think I am going to stick with the factory synthetic for the break in and continue doing my own oil changes every 3500 miles with Mobile 1 synthetic. I am going to stick to what has worked for me before. And regarding the new EVO, I am not much of a stereo guy, but I love the leather Recaros. Makes the car look a lot more sophisticated. Now all I need are some 18" wheels and a 1" drop. It will probably have to wait till I finish my MBA.
Hey Neonsalamander, I guess you are the guy who was supposed to go to the dry lake bed with us? Maybe we can still do that at the end of this year or next spring.

I was reading Moto man's break-in procedure and he was saying punch the hell out of the car so the rings seat in properly but that's just me. I've tried looking for the exact site but onl came up finding his site... if you can find it.. good for you. Here's the link:
