Why does the US Evo site refer to it as the Lancer Evo and not Lancer Evo VIII
Its almost as if Mitsubishi is afraid to call the car the Lancer Evolution VIII. The only reason I can think of for them to do this is because it will be drastically different from the "real" EvoVIII.
Are we gonna get a watered down version? This would be in sync with the various rumours around that our Evo won't have the ACD/AYC/new 6speed tranny. Only time will tell....

It may be simply good business sense. Referring to the Lancer Evolutions by their number releases in Japan or overseas was good - because they received them from an earlier number series, like 1, in Japan.
However, this is the first Lancer Evolution sold in the States - if you think about it, it's odd to call it Lancer Evolution version 8, if Versions 1 - 7.5 were never sold there.
And then there is the fact that the version number is so high - what do you do when you have the Lancer Evolution XVI? It's getting more that just a bit clunky at that time. This is why Subaru stopped using the version number system with the STi. It is now known simply as the WRX STi overseas and domestically in Japan.
It is probably just something that marketing told them to do.
It also simplifies their life, because they won't have to answer endless questions like "why didn't we get the Lancer Evolution VII like you promised??".

It's the same thing with the golf gti 337 edition. in Europe it's the 25th Aniversary Edition. Seeing that the gti hasn't been in this country for 25 years, they couldn't use the name. so they used it's test car code name, "337".
And in my next lesson, we will learn why ketchup has so many spellings.

Exactly!
I would rather have MOA introduce the Evo as an "Lancer Evolution" as oppose to a "Evo7", "Evo8" or whatever.
Who gives a crap what they call it, just as long as we receive some of the same specs. as other Evo offshores.

we are probably getting an Evolution vs Evolution8 because many car buyers would be: what happened to the Evolution 1 through 7? Remember, that informed car buyers/entheuists are in the minority.

It just gives Mitsu a chance to drop the numbres. Remember that EVO 1-6 were homologation specials for rallying. Rally cars don't necessarily have "model years" so they could use the numbers to differentiate a new car from an old one.
Now the Evolution street car and the rally car are "different" beasts. Mitsu can just start giving the car a street model year, like 2003 Lancer Evolution, and don't really need to number it. Notice that the WRC still is getting numbered, they're up to the Evo WRC2 now, right?
That's just my guess at least.

A lot of people in the US don't know about the EVO. To indroduce a car for the 1st time in this country as an 8 people would question what happened to 1-7. As dumb as that sounds it's true.
