How much HP are you going to make by removing the air filter anyway? Is the .005 additional horsepower worth the price of a new engine? A new turbo? A bunged up intake sensor?

(sarcasm alert!)

If you *really* think that you can free up all sorts of HP by uncorking the intake then just get a "performance" panel filter. You can experience firsthand the massive horsepower gain of a hi-flow filter element AND experience engine-turbo damage caused by poor filtration at the same time! Even better - just put a sticker on the car. That's worth 30HP alone!

Great post! Running without a filter on a street car is ricey and compromises the longevity of the motor. If you want to make power, get fuel management and lean out the mixture the correct way.

Your having unprotected intake syndrome. It will get the engine and turbo infected with UIS.

I once tried my car without the airfilter, and while it sounded different, I do believe I was loosing power in higher rpms. It didn't feel as strong. It felt as if it was running out of breath quicker. I reinstalled the airfilter and it seemed back to normal.

I don't see any good reason to remove the airfilter unless you are after that riicey F&F turbo sound....

crap does build up and the turbo spools at very high RPM's by running without a filter you guarentee that your turbo and engine life will be shortened Turbotrix and other hard core racers don't really care about that because lets face it if an engine blows its just a good reason to get another one. However for a daily driver car for the normal indevidual engine life is important. Even if some of the organic debree burns up and doesn't clog think of this what is the melting point of rock? small sand particles and rock dust will not burn away and will build up and is very hard it will tear your turbo apart as well as the rest of your engine as some of it will get past the turbo and into your block.

super bad idea. you can't drive anywhere where it's dirty, you can't even turn off a road because you'll most likely kick something up that'll get sucked in and kill yer ****. if that's how you want to daily drive... i don't get it. drag cars that see at most 5 miles in any given day and 0 miles at all other times can afford to do this because not only do they not get driven but they also get broken down after every event.

if you've seen tsuchiya's ae86 running open intake manifolds it's also because trd maintains that **** for him. so.... not a good idea. not a good idea. oh yeah and if the dirt doesn't gunk yer **** or clog yer **** it'll shatter yer **** instead.

so bad idea. it's not even about rice or not rice. running without intake prolly has it's benefits. but really.... you have to realise the correct, appropriate, waranted application. that's why i hate people callin' rice. that's like sayin' fast cars are rice... you're wrong ****ers, incorrect application is rice, a whale tail on a slow car is rice. a body kit that drags on the ground and causes more trouble than aerodynamic efficiency is rice. a fake turbo noise generator is rice. wheels that look race but are heavy are rice. think people... don't be dumb ****s jumping to conclusions. all that is japanese is not rice.
