Aggressive Launch, Burning Clutch
Aggressive Launch, Burning Clutch
Hey guys,
I have been reading here how to 'launch' our cars... and I didn't buy this to be a show car, so if I break things, I am willing to fix them (ie. I won't be taking this thing to Mits for warranty work, unless it is a defect in workmanship... smoking my clutch is NOT a defect in workmanship). I am also a mature driver who doesn't street race... BUT I wanted to see if I could launch this thing correctly.
So... anyways:
Last night I took a girlfriend out to a very deserted country road around here... and we were gonna practice the launch. The first attempt... I put in the clutch... rev'd her to about 5k... started slipping the clutch.. felt it grabbing and punched the gas while letting off the clutch. I am NOT sure what the heck happened. Honestly. The RPMs shot up to redline... the car made all sorts of revving noise (but no grinding)... and we just sat there. Now I am not sure if I was just burning clutch or spinning tires... but we didn't move. I am thinking.. I was burning clutch. We finally took off... but it certainly wasn't a FAST launch.
Well... I am either stubborn, stupid, or both.. but after waiting a few minutes... I tried again. This time, I didn't rev quite as high... and let it slip a bit more. We still sat there for a brief moment, but then took OFF like a rocket. I think I was slipping a little or spinning (still not sure)... but the rush was pretty nice.
Anyways, I will try again someday.. but I think I am gonna only rev to 4k and not punch the gas so hard until the clutch is ALL the way out.
Any thoughts? or similar experiences or advice?
Thanks!
PS - I KNOW that I am gonna replace my clutch as soon as it is ruined... so that is not a concern of mine.

were you on a dirt road. you may have burnt the clutch a little. when you try it again start out at like 3000 rpms and work your way up. but make sure that the clutch is not hot when you do it. so dont go out on a long ride and get the clutch hot and the try to do this launch again.
if you need a clutch get the ats twin dick carbon. this is the clutch that I am getting ready to put in.

You will need a clutch real soon by practicing launches(sound like me in the beginning 2700 miles on stock clutch). Take it to the track and dump it at 6000 rpms. Tires will spin a lil and you will take off. Do not practice on the street. The street has tons of grip and it is not good when AWD grips from the onset. You either bog or break stuff. IMO The only way to launch this car with the stock clutch semi successfully is to dump it while reving at 6000rpm and pray. Good luck!
When you let go, did your RPM drop? That maybe why you were just standing still, cause you were lagging.
if you really wanna have fun, make sure you're boosting up at 10psi at 6oooRPM then feather your clutch to do a slip. That's really fun.
Or you could try the 7000RPM drop. That's fun too, but be sure you're ready to buy another clutch.
I've done several of those and my clutch is slipping a bit, but it's been alright.

Looks like I will be replacing my clutch sooner than later
how do you guys feel about launches/ breaking the drivetrain?
sure the stock clutch will just burn.. but when you get a stronger clutch- as someone said b4 a 6 puck, and it doesnt slip, then wont the drivetrain be taking a beating?

Yeh, you were spinning your tires.
You'll know when your clutch is going bad, when you try to drop at 6oooRPM and when you drop it the rev drops down to 4oooRPM instead of holding and grabbing it immediately.
Dropping the clutch at 7oooRPM is fun. Wholesome entertainement for the whole family.

I tried launching my car several weeks ago as well. I was at a stop sign and rev'd to about 5K, slipped the clutch and punched it. The RPM's shot up to redline quick and I sat there for a brief moment then took off. I did not smell any burnt clutch but did small rubber so I must have been spinning my tires. I have not tried it since due to I do not want to fry my clutch.

clutch aint cheap
