Engine braking helps turbine cooling?

I had just installed my EGT gauge (d-series 2-nd cylinder 5" from the block) and was observing temperature drops from 1400F down to 700F while engine braking.
I have a habit to revmatch and downshift 4->3->2 while coming to a stop, so I saw temperature dropping consistently. Is it some sort of a "ventilation effect"?
At idle and at least for a 30sec. after I shut off the engine needle stays at 1000F

I think most people use gauges that read in Celcius, not Fahrenheit.. 1400F is about 760C

Makes perfect sense, your not pumping burning gases on deceleration.. the ECU seems to cut fuel on decel so your basically pumping air through the turbine..
