Are there any previous S4 owners around here?
Hey guys, nice to see some former Audiworld people on here. (my handle is V-Twin on AW) I had a 2001 S4 for about two years and just replaced it with an '04 Evo, I'm still trying to sell the S4. I had an APR stage 3 kit with coilovers, big brakes, and the whole works. Once I realized how much money I spent on that car, which was close to 20k, and then drove a stock Evo my mind was made. The S4 is too heavy to be a really good handling car, I did a few track days and a lot of auto-x with it and it did well but would never have been very competitive. I didn't really care about all the luxury so I have no regrets switching over to a sportier car. I have had my car for two weeks now and already have one auto-x and one track day on it...I can't wait to start modding it now.

About the interior noise:
It drove me nuts when my S4 rattled
When I hear the Evo rattle (not over the cams, exhaust etc....) - I don't care
As far as a daily driver - it can be drivin civil
It's just difficult because the car screams at you to push it!

and the 10year/100,000mi warranty doesnt cover the Evo, unless the fine print changed recently.
As you guys can see in my sig im going to bed looking for a new car this winter/spring since my RSX goes off lease in December. I would love either an '05 Evo VIII (S&S&L), or a Certified S4. They are about the same price, tho the Evo can be haggled for less. Actually the sad this is that the monthly payments to buy an '02 Cert S4 are the same as leasing a brand new '05 S4 for 42months. Its definetly a dilemma. Evo is an amazing sports car, S4 is a sweet sport cruiser. S4 is definetly a chick magnet, Evo is a cop magnet. S4 is luxury, Evo is raw. I still want them both hahah, but i gotta pick one.

How do you like the EVO so far? You're Mark right? I bought your RS4 IC's a while back. I'm planning on eventually setting up my car for road course and track days but so far I like it in just stock form but it probably won't stay that way for long. I returned my S4 to stock and the shifter just drive me crazy! Any plans for going lightweight on the EVO?

meanmud - I agree... For a $40,000+ car, the Audi S4 sure does rattle a lot and has a lot of other crap that you shouldn't have to put up with in a "luxury" sedan.
AlwaysinBoost - Who told you that if you "do anything to mod your RS that warranty is as good as gone?" That's a common misconception. Mitsubishi would have to PROVE that the modification in question directly caused the part in question to fail. That's the LAW. Besides, I have a couple of friends at a local dealership, so I don't forsee it being a problem.
The clutch, oil changes, and other maintenance or "wear & tear" items (excluding gasoline and tires) are covered under Mitsu's new 3 year/45k mile "Free Scheduled Maintenance Program." According to what I was told, the RS qualifies for this and the clutch is in fact covered. I agree it does sound too good to be true, but Audi had the same "maintenance free" program and I had two clutches replaced under warranty back on my old green 2001.5 S4!
The 10yr/100k mile powertrain warranty also applies to the Evo. Check out the following link and read all the fine print: it specifically states that ALL models are covered. There is no mention of the Evo being excluded.
http://www.mitsubishicars.com/MMSA/WarrantyOffer
I also called Mitsubishi Motors of North America and confirmed it all: the Evo IS covered under all of these new warranty programs.
As for the Evo vs S4 debate... I'd definitely say get the Evo over the S4. The S4 is an aging platform and if you think it's a chick magnet, you are terribly mistaken! When you think about it, the S4 is really no different aesthetically than an 8 year old A4! If you want a chick magnet, try a Viper or Vette. Also, the S4 poses serious reliability concerns with the turbos and synchros in the trans. The Evo seems far more reliable, especially at higher power levels.

Hey Kyle,
Ask me that question in about 12 hours--I'm picking her up tonight!
What did you do with all of your S4 goodies if you put the car back to stock? I actually might be interested in buying those RS4 ICs back, as well as an APR bipipe and a set of aftermarket BPVs if you've got any of that stuff...

unless its new for '05 the 10y doesnt cover the Evo. i worked for a dealership this summer, and just about nothing covers the Evo. even the free oil maintenence isnt covered cause u have to use mobil1.
if im wrong, thats great, and thats another reason for me to get an Evo this winter!
