Problem with EGT install

Hey all,

I have a problem. Hoping you guys can help me out. I took my car to Jotech to get my EGT gauge installed. They installed the probe on my Helix downpipe (at the bottom). Now, when it rains, the probe gets wet and my EGT needle bounces all over the place. I took it back and they said that the probe is only half in the dp and half of the sensor is sticking out. So, it is reading the water hitting the sensor. So they wrapped it with heat shield wrapping. That still did not fix the problem. I asked why they did not install the probe on the exhaust manifold. They said that it would not be an accurate reading only installing in one of the runners on the exhaust manifold. I said, why would you install the probe down at the bottom of the car where it gets WET! They said that they will take another look at it, to see if there is another place to install the probe. They said if i can send them pics of other installs of other places where evos have installed egt gauges, they would take a look. So, if you guys have pics, post em. Also, comments are welcome. My other problem is now if they move the probe, they said they would weld shut the hole on my helix dp where the probe was. Is that safe?

Thanks

Jeff

The probe only measures really from the tip. That's not the problem. The temperature gradient from the back to the front would be so minimal under driving conditions when splashed with water that the probe probably wouldn't react in time to change the needle position on the gauge.

The hole can be plugged with an NPT plug or welded shut

You can mount the egt on the manifold, that's the best place for it anyway.

I put it in the bottom side where the downpipe angles. No problems. But i think you problem is the probe is not in all the way. Did they just shield it instead of putting it in all the way?

I have no idea, they just told me that the probe is a lot longer and it all will not fit into the downpipe.
