How to Make Your Optional Mitsu Console Gauges RED

You will need two VDO red diffuser packs from www.egauges.com:

http://www.egauges.com/vdo_acce.asp..._Type_E/C&Cart=

(be sure include the "=" for the link to work.

Qty Part No Name Price Total
--- ------- ------------------------------------------------ ----- -----
1 600-853 Red Diffusers for Type A, 9/32 inch bulb, 4 pack $2.96 $2.96
1 600-859 Red Diffusers for Type D, peanut bulb, 4 pack $3.01 $3.01

What you do here is remove the climate control bezel (remove the 3 knobs and 2 screws, then pull it off), unscrew the 4 screws that hold the DIN gauge harness. Carefully unclip the small wiring harness from each gauge and unplug the vacuum hose from the boost gauge. Gently remove the rubber bulb plug from the gauges and use a pair of needle nose pliers to carefully twist each bulb socket from the rear of each gauge. Install a small red diffuser on each bulb, then install a larger one over the small one. Carefully install each bulb such as not to let the larger diffuser slip off. You must use both diffusers, as one diffuser causes the gauges to be bright pink. With two diffusers, the gauges will match the climate control, clock, lighter, etc. *perfectly*. You won't believe how well it matches - looks like it came that way.

hey i did this, good stuff, if you guys wanna know how to get stuff like the fog light button red post and i'll put that up.

the ac/defrost buttons still light up green and orange, which looks weird sometimes but it's ok... justifies leaving the driver side window button's green light.

After you did this mod, can you read the guages easily? I've replaced them with red bulbs and they are so dark that I can barely read the guages. Especially the needles are red also. BTW, did you use the same method to convert the fog light button red too?

if you wanna change the colors of other buttons (foglight etc) or change them to red, you gotta cut the blue cover off... and then put another cover on.

i changed mine to read... the cluster is not all that easier to read... it's just prettier in the dark.

I've just ordered 2 74 red bulbs from superbrightleds.com. Hopefully they work out.

I think I might give this one a try. The results look pretty nice, so I guess its worth a few bucks.

I installed these covers when I relocated my radio to the bottom and installed Stewart Warner gauges (with the red LEDs from 42 Draft Designs). They match the speedo gauge cluster perfectly and look great at night now.

I also have the 2nd half of the bulb covers sitting on my desk from the packages of 4. This is good for one more installation. I'll mail them out to the first person that PMs me for them.

Kinda a side note, red is much better to have than any other color in the car espically for night time driving, red retains the best night vision out of all the colors, blue hinders night visions and green or any other color or white. What i mean by this is if you were in a red lit room for 10 min and then to walk someplace dark, your eyes would adjust much quicker and be less of a strain then say if you were in a blue, green, white, w/e color lit room.

I made the clock red pretty simple by just covering the digit's glass part with 3M clear RED film. thats what i used to do the rest of the gauges and also the mirror button. disabling the clock dimmer is a must with this mod
