Painting your trunk lock

I had mine done...looked good for a while then it started to chip off.
How does one prep this good enough? Will paint ever adhere to it correctly cause its stainless steel, i read. Any tips are appreciated.

This is what it looked like before, its all chipped now tho

Be careful when you put the key in and it won't chip up. Mine has been painted with Krylon (cheap spray paint) for a year and it hasn't chipped at all.

Thumbs up

you could powdercoat it but that's a little more than Krylon. Krylon is the best spray paint you can buy. if it wasn't for the NYC graf artists, they'd be outta business!!!!!!!!

Powercoating it would be stupid, just remove it and paint it. It takes 3 seconds to remove the lock, try using some primer on it to keep it from chipping.

try getting some fine grit (2000 grit) sandpaper to rough up the surface ever so slightly first. This will help the paint "bite" onto the surface.

It looked really good..........till 2 months (winter) later when it was all flaky and chipping.
Ill try to sand it up and prime it then paint. As im told tho, there will always be problems with it sticking to stainless steel.

That's a smart mod for the other color evos... it already looks just fine on silver though!

just don't use you key on the lock if you paint it and it shouldn't chip. Just use your lever inside the passenger compartment.

wingnut17: mine chipped and i never used the key in it ever. its just hard to get the paint to adhere to the SS trunklock in the NY winters i guess with the temp changing alot

Kwman: look on the underside of the trunk, remove a sliding hangar, snap the rod out of the yellow clip, lock comes off.
