Fixing broken front bumper

The bottom lip of my front bumper (called the air dam, perhaps) is separating
from the main upper part, because a couple of the cheap *** glued on clips
that hold the two together couldn't take the stress of hitting a few orange
vinyl cones (okay, more than a few ).

I tried running a bead of superglue across the seam between the two, and
that held up for a 900 mile trip, but didn't survive the next autocross.

A replacement bumper cover is over $500, so I'm not going that route (would
like to hear of any used ones for sale, though).

What would be the best way to repair this cheaply? I'm think I could drill holes
in the seam where the two pieces mate, and put in rivets, or nuts and bolts.

Any better ideas?

I went to www.homedepot.com, did a search for "glue" and didn't see any two part adhesive.

I know this is an old thread, but can anyone point to the brand/type of glue I need to use and where I could buy it? Or offer an alternative to gluing? I am tired of watching my lip separate from the bumper

Thanks in advance...

I gave up on the glue and tried something else. I found clear plastic tape, somewhat stretchable, at Ace Hardware. I ran it across the seam between the lower lip and the upper bumper. It's almost invisible, and so far is holding just fine, although I haven't yet hit a fox with it. :-) In fact, it looks exactly like that deluxe clear coating (3-M brand?) they charge you $300 for, to put on your bumper and protect it from scratches.

Last time I checked, it's not a couple hundred bucks -- you can't buy just the lower lip from the dealer, and the entire bumper costs about $800, unpainted. Figure another $300 for painting and installation.

The two-part adhesive referred to in the previous posts is probably just your standard two-part epoxy. World's strongest and most versatile adhesive. It doesn't set quickly, and you're supposed to clamp it, but it is stronger than almost any of the materials that it is used to bond, including wood and plastic.

Super-glue is just for those applications where you need quick adhesion without long-term clamping. And it doesn't stick well at all to clear-coated, painted surfaces like the Evo bumper.

Thanks for all the advice. Since my lip is only coming apart at one fender (only one of those cheap white clips broke off), I am going to start by trying the epoxy. If that doesn't work, I'll go around the world with the tape.

One question on epoxy: if I use it between two painted surfaces, will the paint simply come off? I've tried epoxying something to a painted wall before and I soon had a pile of crap on the floor. I assume auto paint is way stronger, but wouldn't mind some reassurance.

I'm sure that auto-paint and clear coat adhere much better to the bumper than paint does to dry-wall, especially 20-year old paint. That being said, there's no guarantee it won't pull the paint apart from the bumper plastic. In any case, this isn't a visible area, so it doesn't much matter, does it? You can give it a try, and if that doesn't work, either epoxy it again, or go with the clear plastic tape.

Thanks again for the advice guys. I've had the gorilla glue on since Saturday and it is still holding after a couple bottom-outs with my splitter (forgot to mention the front splitter: more weight ).

I'll post if it starts to tear apart again.
