$50 DIY K&N intake install

Hello All,

I've been using a K&N drop in filter for about a year with good result. I wanted to try a quality cone filter setup, but didn't want to drop $100-$200 on one. After some poking around, I found this setup for sale on Ebay by a company called Duax Machine for $50.00. I gave it a shot and am very happy with the results.

The kit came with a new K&N filter and aluminum MAF filter adapter. You'll have to supply your own nuts bolts and washers.

Here is the MAF filter adapter installed, and the filter installed on it.

A bracket will need to be made to support the assembly. This is easily done by purchasing some strap steel from Home Depot and bending it into the shape below. Note the notch cut out near the top. This will allow the bracket to mount onto the MAF. The other side of the bracket bolts to a threaded hole in the car that was previously used for the now removed airbox mounting bracket. Re-use the 10mm bolt that came out of the hole.

Here is the bracket installed on the MAF. I test fitted it, then removed the bracket and painted it flat black.

Here is the finished product! This took a total of 30 minutes and turned out great! You can tweak the bracket until you're happy with the filter placement.

Another shot of the filter installed. Sounds great!

I thought having those cone filters made the MAF go el psycho if you don't have a flash? or is it the intake pipe that causes it?

^ I've yet to see anything that is conclusive on the matter. AMS uses them, which is good enough for me although I probably would only purchase it for the sound. The stock airbox is so muffled, but I like the fact that it isn't sucking in hot air from the engine bay at speed.

It looks good. Dunno how great it sounds, but I'd rather not be sucking in warm air.

At speed, there would be so much cool air from outside coming in you don't have to worry about sucking :P

Hey guys,

Thanks for the comments. Regarding the horsepower increase, I have yet to dyno this car, so I have no clue. I would say the increase is one that improves with the number of related modifications that you make. I have a full 3" exhaust, SAFC and boost controller and felt a little increase on the old butt dyno.

I do plan on adding a metal heat shield of some sort to keep the filter sucking in cool air.

I would call or email duaxmachine if you are looking for this setup and can't find it on Ebay. I paid $49.95 for it.

For those that would like to buy this setup, but aren't having luck getting it through duaxmachine, you can buy the parts seperately.

The K&N filter is part number RU-4260
Here is the filter on K&N's site

I searched on Summit racing and it is currently $35.99

Then you'll need to buy a MAF adapter. You can find them on Ebay for $10-$12 shipped. Click here to see one I found. Buy a metal one, the plastic ones look pretty flimsy.
