How to connect dash lights to headlights?

Does anyone know how to make it so that the dash lights don't come on, ie. tach, speedo, gas, all the stock gauges when the headlights aren't on.

I often make the mistake of driving at night in well lit areas without my headlights on because I think that they are on because the dash is lit up.

What wires would i need to cut/splice to get the dash to NOT light up?

Thanks!

well your dash lights up even if your headlights aren't turned on.... turn the switch all the way back to turn off all lighting.

half turn is intermediatary lighting, full turn on the switch is for the headlights.

I still don't understand why you would want to even do that....

when i get into my car at night and put in the key, and the lights are all the way OFF, the dash lights, turn on

all i wanted to know is if there's a way to make it so that they don't come on, until you turn the headlights on

i know that this is a dumb question, i'm just curious

thanks

Well I never knew that happened in an EVo... And i'm still kind of surprised no one with an EVO has come on here to even give some input.

So you turn the car on and the dash lights automatically light up? That shouldn't happen...

yeah it kinda sux,

my friends jetta 1.8 also does the same thing

it results in us often forgetting to turn our headlights on

it only happens in places well lit with street lamps

i know its my fault, but its a mistake anyone could make

That is the strangest thing I've ever heard... I know cars that have daytime running lights but even in those their dashes don't light up until you switch it on.

I guess you can just pull a fuse? only thing I can think of.

or toggle the dimmer switch.... turn it up when you need to see the gauges.

yeah

i was wrong about the jetta, i sat for another minute and thought about it

the lights turn on in the dark even if you don't switch them on

the dash can be off and the lights are on

i dont know if my evo is just weird

ill do the dimmer thing

that makes the most sense

thanks!

yes is normal and I have also made the mistake of driving off without turning on my headlights for a few meters of course. Just remind yourself to turn off the headlights whenever you leave the vehicle unattended (if you're one of those ppl who turn their headlights day and night) and turn it on as soon as you get in.

The only problem with the dash lights being on all the time is the bulbs go out much more often then other cars. I would say they need to be changed almost every year and a half. I wonder what is the reasoning behind having the dashlights on as soon as you turn the key in an evo? It may have to do with daytime visibility but I never removed the bulbs and connected back the cluster in the daytime to find out.

i havent noticed that they even help during the daytime. being that the lettering is all actually red , you can see it perfectly with sunlight.

well, if anyone knows how to undo that factory setting so they only come on with headlights, thatd be cool to share. ill search how-tos.

That probably wouldn't be too easy. You would need a multimeter to find out which is the power light to the cluster. Then splice it into another harness the powers up when you flip the headlight switch.
