EGT Gauge probe??

Hello All.
I am just wondering where can I put EGT gauge?
Right on Manifold? or Downpipe closest to turbo?

Some people are saying that it wouldn't be good to put it on the manifold because of the high pressurized turbo system. however, saw many car with EGT probe on manifold and running over 20psi boost.

Any suggestins??

the reason some people preffer not to do the manifold is due to the fact that if for some reason the probe become faulty it might go into the turbine and mess it up. i have mine in the manifold and it is good.

I put mine on the first runner. Turned out to be a pretty clean setup.

thanks for posting the pics STVBREAL. i was wondering the best place to mount it. Did you drill the hole and have the bung welded on?

I did the work myself. Drilled and tapped the whole but didn't have it welded. Took the header out first of course. I used some heavy duty thread lock/sealer that my budy uses on his dragster. No leakage. If it did it would show balck soot. All is well.

stvbreal - how big is the probe for your gauge? when i did mine at the same spot, the probe was too short and did not reach to the middle of the manifold where the gas flows. i had to shave that thing down so the probe will go much deeper.

what is your egt reading?

Mine reaches perfect, dead center. My EGTs read in the 14 to 1500's wot. Room to lean it out a bit.

What probe did you use?

stvbreal,
I noticed you polished your heat shield. Someone told me this was aluminum but when I took it off and tried a magnet on it I found out it was steel. Is it aluminized steel? I noticed it has two layers maybe the outer one is aluminum? Sorry for getting of topic.

The heat sheild is layered but I'm not sure which layer is aluminum or if one is. I used a steel brush and never-dull
to to get it to look like that. I'm thinking the top layer is aluminum, it hasn't rusted yet after removing the black crap
protectant that was on it. But the clip that holds the 02 wire is rusting.

About the probe, I 'm using Autometers Competition Series. It's pretty long. About 2 inches, around there. I drilled
straight through the raised part that holdes the heat sheild to the header. If wasn't for the raised part it would
have been too long.

EGT - Exhaust Gas Thermocouple? I work on F-16's and we have a part called the EGT - which measure exhaust gas obviously Is it the same thing?

When you drill into the manifold, is there a concern of getting metal shavings in the turbo downstream? I'm still pretty new to the whole EGT placement...

I was also worried about that so I took the manifold off and drilled it off the car. Then cleaned it real good with brake cleaner. No shavings.
