EGT installation

I did a search but did not locate anything. I just picked up a used Greddy EGT Gauge (no manual with it) and I was wondering the best way to install it. I talked to a friend who I thought might know and he said to actually drill into the turbine, this doesn't sound right to me. Do any of you have any ideas for me?

What is the disadvantage of installing the probe after the turbo instead into the exhaust manifold? This is what I have done on past autos. I would be concerned that part of the probe might crack under repeated heating/cooling cycles and have bits of it run through the impeller.

Doing it into the exhaust manifold will give you true temp reading versus having it after the exhaust turbine which you will see anywhere from 150-300 degree vairences.

Is safety really a non-issue? I'm curious because I'm going to be installing my EGT probe this weekend. Thx.

So from what I read in evo moto's webpage, he has the car idling. Is this to clear out the shavings?

Yeah, from what I gather it is to prevent the shavings from entering the exhaust manifold.

Im wondering if it's ok to tap the BOTTOM of the manifold. Still the 2nd runner, but just drill UP into the manifold as opposed to down, into it.

Anyone know?

either the first {closer to the t-belt on dsm's} or the second {where the knock sensor is} your pick
you can drill without the car running, i did this on my tsi and never had a problem with bits flying to the turbo and damaging it

I just picked up a Greddy EGT. Wouldn't drilling in the location that Evo Moto cause the shavings to enter the turbo housing? Sorry for the newbie question. Does it help to spot weld the bung/prob housing?

I followed this and didnt have any problems; I did have to keep the car running while drilling and had to keep turning it on and off when tapping out the hole because it got so hot (no problems with metal shavings though, just make sure you wear goggles or they will get in your eyes). One very important tip: INVEST IN A GOOD TAP....... the taps in those $10.99 made in China tap and die kits are only going to cause you a lot of grief. You dont want to screw up and have to take off the manifold. I used a Snap-on tap but a good Craftsman should be fine.

I drilled mine right into the manifold with the car idling over a year ago and no problems. The purpose of leaving the car on is to blow the shavings out. The only negative part about it is that it gets really hot while doing it, I was sweating like a pig during the process. Just make sure you keep the drill bit lubricated.

BTW, I used the how to by evomoto as well.
