How to import an Evo IV to the US

I'm looking for anyone out there who has imported an older Evo to the US. I already know the basics of what I need to do, I am just wondering if anyone knows the costs.

Quick answer, it's not worth it. You'll be paying alot of $ to have a car that will not be 100% legal in the states. I had an Evo IV being overseas, why not just get an 8/9 for the same price of going through the hassle of getting a IV to the states. Better car imo, is legal and you can get parts/service easily.

Well I got the car for a steal and was just looking at it as an option for now. I still have over a year before I need to make a decision.

Best way I can think of (remember this is a theory only).
1. Import it to Canada legally. This probably will require the aid of a Canadian citizen willing to help you.
2. Drive the car down into the US.
3. Mirage swap.
4. Register your new 'mirage'.

Whether its legal or illegal depends entirely on how/if you do the mirage swap.

P.S. Speeding is also illegal.

I don't know anyone in Canada. Plus I think I would be better off just shipping back the parts required to do a mirage swap if I do go that way.

You would be better served doing some info gathering on Federalizing your Evo instead of gathering opinions. Since it has to pass emissions and several safety inspections/additions, since this is the govt, there is a doc out there somewhere that will cover requirements. From what I gather you may have options for a show car/race car exceptions, but you will have to see what thats all about... its going to be a long process so get started. GL

Hey man I am in the same dilemma as you. But the thing is its gonna cost A LOT of money. I picked up my Evo IV for 300 bucks the only thing I can do is drive it while I am over here and then sell it. But your best bet is to talk to a registered importer and have him tell you what it will cost. And as for parts being hard to get that is not entirely true. You can do a North American Reference like I am. See what part numbers match with that car.

I hope some of this info helps.

It has to be done through a registered importer or through a contract by one. I can't just do the mods myself. Also to be a race/show car there are a lot of stipulations that basically eliminate that possibility. I have done my research and thus far have not been able to locate a registered importer who will do it.

Either have I. Its just too hard to do right now. Just to get it to US standards will cost from anywhere to 6-8k and on top of that there are other expenses. It really isnt worth sending unless you want to wait till its 25 years old

Everyone that has emailed me back says that they will only do Canadian or high-end European cars. I don't understand why they won't just take my money haha..

What do you think? Evo IVs were never sold in the states, you can't go to the dealership or parts store to get anything you need. Some parts may work from other models, but not gonna get stuff easily or readily available.
